My SSD may have failed, what should I do? :(

Hi,

So I was just on a friends computer fixing it when I looked behind me at my tx2500 laptop to notice the screen all blurry like the split second before a bsod. I don't know what happened but ever since then (20 minutes ago) it's refusing to recognize the ssd in bios. I am now very scared as I am tight for cash and god forbid if it is broken I couldn't go back to living with a HDD *shudders*.

It's just beside me running a bios HDD test with 19 minutes left. I am very scared so can someone just reassure me and tell me it'll be fine.

Anyway, if it's detected by the BIOS and able to be tested, those are good signs.

About the only way to really be sure is to try and "see" the drive on another computer. If you can, back up the data immediately! Then test a mechanical drive w/ your laptop to see if it's a BIOS drive recognition issue, or if the SSD itself is at fault.

It isn't detected by bios as it won't boot, the exact error says something like "insert boot device and press enter" although somehow I can test primary drive which hasn't come up with an error (it's about 60-70% through). By the looks of it seems as I might just have to re install Windows 8 which doesn't seem so bad, redface.gif

Oh god, it says smart hard drive detects imminent failure, sad-smiley-002.gif Any fixes?

It said hard drive test passed, although it also said that hard drive smart detected imminent failure,

Any help? I'm really worried, I've just taken the SSD out and I've also removed the cmos battery, I'm really worried as I don't have the box or receipt and I'm a bit strapped for cash,

Look, do you have another computer (a desktop, anything?) you can try to detect the SSD on? If so, DO THAT! Your first priority should be to back up the SSD!

Everything you've said suggests it is detected by the BIOS, just that there is no data on the drive, or that whatever is on the drive is corrupted.

You wouldn't be able to do anything with it at all if the BIOS couldn't find it.

Taking out the CMOS battery won't do anything as there is likely nothing wrong with the rest of the system.

What exact SMART errors did you find?

What exact drive is this? It's possible that it has a warranty of it's own. Some makers only need the drive and serial number.

1. Make sure the SSD is making full contact with the SATA interface on your laptop.
2 If your bios detects the SSD your fine.
3. Try popping in a reformat CD and do a clean install.
4. If that doesn't work RMA if it is still under warranty.
