atikmdag.sys bsod 12.2 drivers

Thread Starter
I've been having a lot of issues recently which I believe to be related to the gpu drivers. Ever since I replaced my 6950's with a pair of 7970's.

I was trying to set the resolution to 800x600 in css when I bsod'd. I rebooted and enabled gpu scaling and tried again and this time it worked as it should.

This is a screenshot of the dumpfile. Hopefully it will show you enough to give you an idea of the cause. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
289

My fear is of course that one of my gpu's are faulty, but I've been reading a lot about 7970 and driver issues recently so I just wanted to get some input.

I'm on the 12.2 drivers

That unfortunately will help very little.

Can you please navigate to C:/Windows/Minidump and zip / rar up your latest dump files? Once you've done that, please attach the zip / rar to your post by clicking the paperclip icon in the reply / post box.

If there are no files there, you may have it set to writing Kernel Memory Dumps rather than Small. If so, the DMP will be located in C:/Windows itself and named MEMORY.DMP.

If these have atikmdag.sys is the ATI video driver, so if you've been getting these on the latest drivers, just do a rollback to what worked best for you. If you're getting them on all versions, there may be an error somewhere in there from all the uninstalls and reinstalls, or a GPU related error.

032512-14664-01.zip 23k .zip file

I did a fresh install of win7 today, so these 12.2 drivers are the only ones I have installed since then.

Just experienced another issue; I was trying to open the task manager (while css was minimized), but the task manager did not show right away when I clicked on it, and when it did show after a minute or so, it would stop responding. After trying this a few times my pc eventually blacked out and stopped responding all together. And I have been having a lot of these little issues lately, but I haven't been able to make any sense of them, so I'm assuming at this point that this is driver problems. I have tried other drivers too, 12.3 and 12.1 and a few others, but I still had these little random problems. My gpu's can do heaven 2.5 all day, but I still had crashes/freezes happen to me in games, in Shogun 2 and assassins creed revelations, and once in Skyrim. The only thing that's new on my pc are the two 7970's and my cpu which I bought used last week. But I have tested my cpu with prime overnight twice, and is has never given me an error.

Dump shows atikmdag.sys as the culprit, which as we discussed earlier is the ATI video driver. Rather than re-installing 12.2 continuously, try a different earlier version, see if that produces and positive results.

Drivers look good, nothing really out of date.. so I'm just betting on a bad recent driver installation with 12.2, so I recommend a rollback to an earlier version, preferably one that worked great for you in the past.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: ffffffffc0000094, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: fffff880059e8192, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: fffff8800b899108, Exception Record Address

This is of no help but ATI drivers suck! I get the same random errors you do, once I actually get my drivers to work properly I will do everything I can not to reboot because then I have to do my little sequence of getting them to work all over again. Just an example it doesn't matter which driver I install every time I reboot my crossfire shows enabled but it isn't, I have to go into CCC and disable it and re-enable it for it to work again and sometimes I also get the bsod with the same driver issue you get while I am doing that.mad.gif

This is actually the first time I've had serious ati driver issues, and I've been with ati/amd since the 5000 series. But regarding this issue, I did notice that amd have added an audio tab in ccc which I didn't have before with 11.x drivers and my 6950's. And I have had some issues opening the audio settings since I got the 7970's. So I originally suspected that there was a conflict with the windows audio settings somehow. But since I removed my d2x soundcard from the system, I haven't had that issue so it's possible that my soundcard caused the issue. But this issue first started when I got my 7970's.

Can I use older 11.x drivers with the 7970 cards? If so I might give them a try later. I have removed one of the 7970's just to see if it gets any better.

Well, thx for the help so far, hopefully I can get this issue fixed soon. I wish I would get bsod's now instead of my pc just freezing all the time. It makes it so much harder to troubleshoot. Removing one of the 7970's didn't make any difference.

I'm assuming you removed the new one, correct? Regardless, it's probably a driver issue. We'll find out eventually, don't worry, just get to rolling back to a previous driver version if you can (or newer, if available).

Well, they're both new. Got them both at the same time, if that's what you mean. I've been putting the cards in and out and I've been switching them around for the last few days in an attempt to find the cause of the problem. So far unsuccessful. Will probably try some new drivers once I've tested a few other things.
