The Z77 boards will however overclock them better.

What does overclock them better mean? Surely an overclock is down to a cpu's potential with regards to its binning, not the motherboard it is used on.

I.e one mobo allows maximmu overclock of 4.6ghz with 1.3v, the other alows 5ghz at 1.35v. This isnt gonna happen.

Not to say this is normal.. But my Asus Z68 runs an OC setting perfectly stable.. but I am finding with the same components my P67 unstable with the same OC and is corrupting my harddrive...

So its actually possible.. but then again I blame the stinken board.. Go figure

I would love to see these chips hit 5.2ghz at a safe voltage and temp (safe as in the same level of safety settin the SB chips to 4.8ghz would be)
I mean just because we will see lower temps and lower voltages at stock doesnt mean it will scale like the SB does.. And so far I havent seen anything to support it does scale well.. In fact from the 3 or so reports ive seen it doesnt scale well..

Exactly. The 22nm process will yield lower stock voltages, but in turn lower the voltage threshold of the chip. whereas sandy bridge is safe up to 1.52, ivy may only be safe up to 1.40-1.45. I'd expect them to overclock almost as well as SB, but any better is a far shot...SB was a freak of nature.

I also want to know if there is evidence that a Z68 board won't OC an Ivy as well as a Z77 will.

But you seem to be saying that the motherboard is not important. Since overclocking is all about reliable power delivery, a capable motherboard (and PSU) are absolutely required to reach a chip's potential.

Allow me to elaborate. The same 3770k cpu will not overclock better on a decent z77 motherboard, than on a decent z68 motherboard.

yep, just some extra features such as native USB 3.0, lucid virtu MVP, native 1600MHz RAM and some others.. nothing real important for overclocking the cpu smile.gif
