It's pretty cool that someone is "Actually" wanting to check it out....
Over here in Guam, the Trench... help absorb the impact of Japan's tsunami when it it... our sea levels rose*ofcourse.. but it helped sponge the energy from it.
so, Although it's such a small part of the world.. it does play a major role on the planet.
We'll see what he can find down there... and if he comes back... I am a bit skeptical about ppl that explore uncharted areas in our day and age....
GL Mr. Cameron....

It is charted. It is just not explored.
I like to believe there is some form of life down there, massive giant crabs or something, but most likely some small plant or bacteria.
He better not have an ounce of claustrophobia because the sub will actually shrink the farther down it goes, it will be very compact down there.

Test depth: 1,000 m safe, 1,250 m design, 1,500 m crush

It is on the right hand pane. 1000m = 3280 feet

In reality we don't know how deep current military subs can go. Some people know the operating depth, fewer people might know the design depth but no-one really knows the "crush" depth for sure. It is an experiement few are willing to undertake - for obvious reasons!

When I was working on the Astute submarine I was often met with the following line: "I'll tell you anything you want to know except for how fast it is, how loud it is and how deep it goes".

Deep ocean exploration is amazing, there are thousands of species down there which we don't know about.

Most military Subs just say that MAX depth is secret. Also for a military SUB depth is not every important. That Sub i linked is already on the bottom of sea. Its also partly radioactive.

Deep sea stuff has always been really neat to me. I hope this will spur more explorations down there. This is only the SECOND visit (first in over 50 years) to the deepest known spot in our oceans, and probably the first to get any real data on life down there (we'll see). I'm excited biggrin.gif
Second manned visit yes, not the second visit ever. Robotic exploration has already happened and some life-forms were identified. Two more recent robotic expeditions happened in 1995 and 2008.

I personally do not think that manned expeditions are that useful. Robotic expeditions are bound to be much easier and smaller to deploy, have much better data-gathering capabilities, and just overall be much, much cheaper.

Don't get me wrong, this is very cool, but robotic exploration is the way to go.

I disagree, robots are great tools to use, but when your actually there it is different, thrilling, horrifying, enlightening, amazing and more. The experience is worth it alone.

Robots are great for collecting data but don't replace the Explorer.
