Will watercooling get me a better overclock (GTX 480 SLI)?

Right now my stable 24/7 OC on my 480 SLI set up is 865 core, 1730 shader, and 2065 memory. My voltage is the Afterburner maximum of 1.138; any harm in keeping it at that maximum? For any 480 owners: how is that OC comparable to most cards?

I am getting pretty good scores on benchmarks with this OC. Compared to 580 SLI (non OC) and a single 680 (OCed), I am getting better benchmark scores. I have a pretty aggressive fan set up to keep the heat under control. While it was a bit of pain working on the HAF 912, I managed to improve my cable management a bit. I was also able to ghetto rig a 120mm fan blowing into the top graphic card. Ghetto rigging the fan does not look pretty but it helped temps a lot. Fixing my cable management and adding that extra fan improved my temps by around 4C for the bottom card and 10C for the top card. Now the top card is only 1C hotter which is great! I am probably going to add a CPU cooler soon since all I have at the moment is stock (i5 2500k OC to 4.2).

Included a pic to see what you guys think - this is my first build so it probably looks pretty amateurish. Any tips are appreciated.

Anyways, my main question is will watercooling let me OC even further? Or am I pretty much at the maximum for my card? I know there is a way to increase my voltage further by flashing the BIOS but how much of an improvement will that bring?

I have not played with lowering the voltage yet. It was my first time overclocking so I kind of set it to max then started increasing the core, etc. I will probably try to lower the voltage and see if I can keep those clocks.

gotcha. water cooling mainly will help you keeps the temps down so you will be able to push a higher overclock. what are you loads temps running them on air. ive got an ek block on my 480 and havent seen it break 55c after a few hours playing bf3 and it's been hot here the last couple of days

480s love colder temps, so I wouldn't doubt you'd get a higher OC with the same vcore when watercooled.

1.138v is fine if your temps are in check. I'd recommend less than 70'C max if running your current voltage. I run 1.21v 24/7 on my cards with my sig's OC. So if you decide to watercool, you have some headroom on your voltage. I'd recommend 1.15v max for 24/7 use under water on gtx 480s.

I think 1.21v is fine, but I'm only possibly hurting my cards by using this voltage and don't want to damage yours with bad advice.tongue.gif

My cards won't clock past 800 on air, but when I had them on water they sailed along at 920/2200. They really love the cold so go for it thumb.gif

70C max if running at 1.138 voltage? Mine run at about 85C (load) or lower when running benchmark/games. They idle at 56C. I thought any temps below 90C were good?

They are, that is completely fine. My card clocks at 850/1700/1900@ 1.063 volts completely stable! I do not get over 65C in games like ever! lol

I'd dial down the voltage to 1.1v and the OC. Too much voltage with with too much heat will degrade the gpu imo.
