[The Verge] Smoked by Galaxy Nexus: Windows Phone challenge defeated by Android 4.0 - Page 4

This is worse than I thought. If you think Microsoft rigged the challenge to favor its WP7 devices, wait till you see how it cautions employees of certain scenarios where WP7 can be beaten, and offer workarounds to turn the tables around.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/26/2903838/exclusive-microsoft-smoked-by-windows-phone-android-risks

Here's a sample:
Quote:
In the "Update Your Status across Multiple Social Networks" challenge, users must post a "mutually agreed upon status" to both Facebook and Twitter. Here, Store employees are warned about a "power user scenario" that "isn't very common": you can use Selective Tweets to link Facebook to Twitter such that posting to Twitter alone with an "#fb" hashtag will post to Facebook simultaneously. Here, Microsoft says this "could result in a tie." The tiebreaker? "Challenge customers to update their profile picture to those same networks," a task that Microsoft seems more confident it'll handily win.

NONONONO. Not regular tasks! Here, try one of our obscure tasks...and no fair cheating by making full use of your phone's capabilities either!

I think if the challenges actually accomplished something of consequence that people cared about, this might be more interesting. As it stands, do people care to know the weather at two separate locations simultaneously all the time, or that it takes 2 steps vs. 3 steps to update their facebook picture from their phone? I know I'm always going, "OH GOD! I have to press THREE buttons to upload my photo!? Nevermind...!"

It's sadly just a novelty. It's got huge potential, but they're showcasing its novelties, and as such, their marketing fails.

Kudos to you. (not being sarcastic)

I guess it can sound insensitive since I've never had to write a great deal in a foreign language (beyond taking German in high school). It's just that I can understand reading "broken English" without a problem--mis-conjugated verbs and such, I totally get. But strangely punctuated and completely mis-formed sentences despite having perfectly-constructed words, I can't even begin to try to understand. I don't mean it in a bad way, but it's near-impossible to interact (either constructively or at all) after reading the posts, which defeats the purpose of a public forum. redface.gif

I have no problems learning English as my second language. It's all in the Philippine curriculum from the get-go. biggrin.gif

Anyways, I am sorely disappointed at how Microsoft conducts its challenges. Not only does it create challenges it's confident WP7 devices can win, but also anticipates certain scenarios where competitors can win, and steer clear of such potential losses. If anything, MS should be man enough to host challenges without device pre-configuration or allow iOS and Android owners to use the entirety of the platforms' strengths against Windows Phone 7's own.

I agree--in fact, I would put more faith in them doing it the other way.

MS is afraid it will give away too many laptops, because it knows the risks of hosting the challenge in the first place. Everyone will try to do their darndest to beat it just to get the prize; thus, it's doing everything - even changing rules on the fly - to prevent such from happening.

Or if you actually read the rules, it says that there is a LIMIT for laptops, 10 per store.

Please go

So ten laptops max and the store won't host anymore?

This.

I like Windows Phone but Microsoft is just afraid of losing their challenge.
