It can get to 75c at max load with 80% fan. Playing bf3 and alan wake. Its really loud. Think the stock vid is 1.038 odd. Im gona get a bottom case intake fan to blow directly at the blower inlet and see if that helps. Air penetrator fan or something before i spend £60 on an acellero

edit: or can anyone advise on a good fan for said purpose? to blow up from the bottom, will have to blow air past a few neatly organised psu leads, but shouldnt matter..........dont wna have to spend a fortune!

Ok sorry to keep this post going, I know a 480 is old news now but Im still bowled over by it...............anyway I decided to bite the bullet and run occt to test its stability at 850/2000 on stock volts, just to be sure it wasnt a fluke. It gets a single error after 45 seconds, then they start adding up one at a time, which is still pretty awesome as in the past my gpus have just shat the bed and had 100`s of errors all of a sudden. So anyway backing down to 840 solved the problem. Stil a pretty freaking awesome gpu since many seem to need alot of extra volts to get that hight an overclock.

So here`s the thing, its loud as hell and it needs something done about it. Ive also registered the warranty now so its good for 5 years.

Now I dont like the fact that the AXP basically takes up three slots. I also dont like the fact that once the vrm sinks have been installed they cant be removed, which means the cooler is married to the card for life, then money basically lost down the line.

Ive also always wanted to watercool my rig and im seeing this as a golder opportunity to get the absolute most out of the card......im never going to sli it as the card awesome as it is, sucks alot of juice and I dont want to double up.......also id likely negate the fact that this one seems to be awesome in that another card likely wouldnt clock as well and would hold it back, so im going to just enjoy this card by itself. It seems to run its 1.5GB of vram perfectly, so I dont want another sli gtx 460 1GB scenario where the vrm holds them back.

If I water cool this card I may get 950 from it..........which would be tasty. But I dont want a full cover block as they seem expensive and this will be wasted money down the line no? Im thinking getting a universal block, and something to cool the vrms so that ill always have a block for my future big gpu.

Im also really tempted to just pull the trigger on a loop right now , ive got the money saved up.

Just need some advice from some experienced users who have had a 480 and went down this route. What rad would be sufficient etc.............

Ive got a fracal arc mini, which has a nice area for a thick 120mm rad, or a 240 up top, but ive got a megahalems in there too so dunno about the spacing,

Thanks in advance for any info.

EDIT: IVE JUST BEEN REMINDED OF THE PRICE OF WATERCOOLING AND F THAT

I agree. My SSD was the best 100 bucks I ever spent on my PC. Amazing out how much faster it makes things when you add something like that into a system.

I had the VF3000F Zalman cooler on my 480 (actually two of them in sli) before I installed my current AC Accelero.
The Zalman is a very effective cooler, providing similar results to the Accelero, as seen in that review, and from my own experience as well.
The one-piece vrm/memory plate included with the Zalman cooler is just like using the stock 480 plate, except it has more fin area.

You've got a good card there. I use the default voltage of 1.063v. for my permanent 800/2000 clocks, which produce no errors in OCCT. However, for anything beyond that, I just max out the voltage slider to 1.150v. on Afterburner. I need the extra juice to run it error-free on OCCT at 900 MHz. That is about the maximum for mine, without resorting to running even more voltage, which I don't care to do.

It looks like your card will do at least as well, probably better, and may need less voltage.
Quite a difference from the 460!

Looking forward to your results.

Ok

Installed cooler yesterday, got thermal grese all over the vrms, was a nightmare. Cleaned them as best i could, found out its non conductive so all good. Got it installed.
I didnt need the fan mate as my fractal arc mini came with a little pci slot fan controller which works awesome, so i can controll it from a little knob at the back in the vertical pci slot for said purposes.
Ran occt, temp skyrocketed just like the normal cooler. Was pretty wound up. Thought id need to reseat it. Gave up for the night.

Today i began again. Fired up unigene this time at 1.038v for 840mhz like id been running on stock cooler. Didnt break 60c even at fan set to its lowest speed.
It seems the cooler is great up to a certain point then the temp goes crazy (in occt).

So i ended up with an overclock of 900mhz at 1.113v, still not breaking 60c on unigene.
Any higher and it driver resets. Even with 1.150v. Which im not worried about at all as the cooler kept temps still around 60c.
Also i should note that the pcb tem stays around 35c when it used to hit 50c.

Right now im tesing it with occt again aiming to get 3 different overclocks all with the fan set quiet. It doesnt seem to make much difference running it any faster either which is weird. But good that its obviously designed to cool its best at low speeds.

Anyhow here are my first results which are 15mins occt stable

1: Undervolted to1.00v at 800mhz/1900mhz stable. Higher memory gets errors. it sits at 74c - 24/7 setting probably. Pcb 45c. Fan quiet
2: trying 1.050v at 850mhz and the temp hits 80c and beyond. Not comfortable with that, even with fan turned up.

At least its good that i can run occt at 800mhz with 1v staying below 75c. Im now going to test a benchmark run in unigene 2.5 with all settings maxed and see if its even worth running at 900mhz with 1.113v.

Sooo at 800/1900 the score is 697. Fps 27.7. 50 celcius.
Now at 900/1900 the score is 754. Fps 29.9. 62 celcius.

Definately not worth the extra volts and heat.

Well there we have it. I can now play games at 900mhz with 1.113v and temps stay around 60-64c.
I can also now play occt at 800mhz with 74c

Congrats on getting that Zalman cooler installed on your 480:thumb:
Good to see you're enjoying the replacement for the 460, and now you've done something about the cooling and stock fan noise!
That's the beauty of having a good aftermarket cooler on a 480, you can tell all the naysayers that criticize the 480's temps. and fan noise to shadaaaap:D

I'm still rocking mine after two years, and just don't see the need to fork out for a 680 or 7970 yet.
I had two running in sli with excellent results, but I'm experimenting with some ridiculous fans at the moment, so I just have one installed for now.
There's a photo of it in the build link in my sig.

When I had the Zalman coolers, I remember the fun putting thermal compound on those tiny vrms! Not at all an easy job, but as you said, you used a non-conductive type so it should be fine.
That's convenient having the fan controller with that case, and you don't have to open it up to adjust the speeds. I just left mine plugged straight in to the psu, running the fans at 100% full-time.
I've since modded my stock vrm plate to fit with the Accelero I'm now using, as the Zalman plate's fins were too tall to clear the AC's heatsink, unfortunately. I had to go back to using thermal pads on the stock heatsink plate. I did like the way that Zalman made their plates to use thermal compound instead.

Looking over your comprehensive testing results. Very interesting.
Your OCCT results are a huge improvement over the stock 480 cooler. It is an intensive test, it runs my card just as hot as Furmark does.
And your temps. running the Heaven bench are very good.

I also tried undervolting my 480's at 800MHz, to 1.000v. My first 480, an EVGA, ran great undervolted at 800/2000. That was good for about a 2C temp drop running Furball or OCCT.
But my second Zotac 480 didn't like being undervolted. Even though it seemed to run fine at 1.000v., it would give errors in OCCT until I re-set the voltage to the stock 1.063v.
I have a modded EVGA 480 FTW bios set for stock voltage, but 800/2000 clock speeds, installed on both cards.

I agree with you that the higher temps. from overvolting it, for say, 900MHz, are not worth it. For me, 800/2000 is the sweet spot in performance and temps. And yet, you can still overclock it to 900MHz with a voltage bump, for benching, games, etc. Not every 480 will run stable at 900MHz, so you've got a good card there.

The 74C temp. you got in OCCT at 800MHz is sure a lot lower than what you'd get running it with the stock cooler. I actually hit 105C running Furmark when I got my first 480, running it with the stock cooler, and the stock radial fan screaming at 100%.

Kind of nice to shave 25-30C off the load temps., isn't it:D
