Caviar Black vs Caviar Blue? - Page 2

WD Green drives spin at 5400RPM. Some review site measured the accoustics and compared to known 5400RPM drives. Intellipower is just a marketing thing. tongue.gif

Blue drives are alright. They're decently fast and good quality. Probably on-par with Seagate drives, or maybe a tad more reliable. They have a longer warranty.

Black drives are the fastest. They use the best quality parts, and you pay a price premium for them. They usually have fast access times. (at least 10-15% better than other 7200RPM drives, giving at least 10-15% more performance in real usage) They also have superior NCQ algorithms. Under heavy multitasking loads, some OCN favourites (like the F3 1TB) drop to about 0.70MB/sec 4K read/write speeds. WD Blacks are usually much higher at 4K speeds.

WD 640GB Black 32MB:
crystaldiskmark100720a.png
crystaldiskmark100802d.png

QD32 shows NCQ at work.

The 4k speeds still suck compared to SSDs, but if you compare to other HDDs and calculate the percentages, a WD Black may open your web browser 30-40% faster. thumb.gif

Hmmm are there any benchmarks between the Black and Blues?

Edit: Posted before I saw the benchmarks.

Yeah it seems like prices have dropped slowly over the last few months but it's super slow and I really would like to set up a raid system behind my couch that could run my server for the house tongue.gif

as kramy said they are on par with blues thus they would not be faster or reliable as a WD Black.. from what i hear, Seagates in many cases now have one year warrantees whilist blues have 3yr and blacks 5 yr.. i would risk my data on seagates anymore IMO smile.gif
