Sahas Katta, a blogger for Skatter Tech, recently took his Galaxy Nexus into a Microsoft Store to partake in the “Smoked by Windows Phone” challenge. Smoked by Windows Phone is Microsoft’s marketing campaign launched at CES that claims Windows Phone can do many basic things faster than its iOS and Android counterparts. Microsoft is so sure it’s platform can best other platforms at the tasks it (carefully) selected for the challenge, it put up a $1,000 special edition laptop as a prize.

In order to lay claim to the $1,000 prize, Mr. Katta and his Galaxy Nexus would need to display the weather in two cities faster than it could be done on the Windows Phone device operated by a store employee. Most of us who run Android know about widgets, and this challenge task can easily be accomplished by placing two different weather widgets on the homescreen of your device, and targeting two different cities. All that stands in your way from immediate gratification is the pesky lockscreen.

But Mr. Katta was smart, and had used settings built into his Galaxy Nexus to disable the lockscreen altogether, and had completed the challenge as soon as he hit the power button on his smartphone, a few seconds faster than the Windows Phone device which had to be unlocked.

I don't see why anyone would ever have to look up the weather of two cities at once. Good to see that someone outsmarted MS!

CNet story talks about Microsoft being cheated themselves. Even though you watch the videos from CES and the dude wasn't typing anything in, just a few taps and hes got his weather for 2 cities.

I agree.

I do a lot of traveling--at no point do I need to know the weather at two locations simultaneously. It's a generally worthless feature to most people. A feature a few people might like? Okay, I'll give you that. But why market a phone/OS using fringe features that the general population either doesn't care about or doesn't benefit from?

I said this in the other thread about this story. MS is screwing the pooch with marketing WP. Trying to "challenge" established users of current smartphones is a fine idea, but there's a much wider market for the people who are not smartphone users--people who are "afraid" of smartphones or intimidated by them. WP had the best "dumbphone-like" UI for people who "just don't get" smartphones. It's the least-intimidating interface, and it has nice big buttons that say what they do.

Because the down-side is you typically end up marketing it to the older population (that generally didn't adopt iphones and androids). And with that comes the stigma that your phone isn't cool and new and him, your phone is for old people (note--I'm not saying that's the case, I'm just presenting a scenario).

WP has huge potential, but not if they continue with their "smoked" campaign for marketing.

I do quite a bit of traveling. The desert, mountains, and beach are fairly common trips for me. For those times, my weather widget has a scrolling feature. I was merely pointing out that there is close to zero reason to have the weather for two different destinations being displayed at the same time.
