The M5A97 is very popular with the low-budget OverClocking crowd. You also have the option of putting in an FX series CPU at any time if you want also. The only real reason to go for a 990 over a 970 is that they have 2 16x PCIe slots, which is really only necessary if you are running SLI(2x Nvidia cards). Using a 16x lane and a 4x lane is fine for any Crossfire (2x AMD cards) short of maybe 7870s, and I am not even certain about that. A lot of people will argue about this, but when you check the bandwidth required for Crossfire the 16x + 4x PCIe slots will be fine for most CF setups. My 6790's purr along smoothly without a hiccup.

And the Samsung memory- it is probably the best $40 I have spent short of maybe a "bar" in Tijuana some years ago...

I'm running an M487TD-EVO and it's been great for me so far. Others have had issues but I had mine doing 1.5v @4.0 just on the FSB OC alone.

If you are buying new, today, why limit yourself with an old AM3/800 series mobo though? Get an M5A97 AM3+ and you are at least current with the 900 series chipset and socket. There are also "M5" boards from ASUS that have the old 800/700 series chipsets with an AM3+ socket, but again, if you are buying today, why not be up to date?

And, the # of phases isn't everything. The 6+2 Digital VRM of the M5A97 EVO makes it superior to the 8+1 Analog VRM of the M4 boards. The M5A97 (which is actually 4+1 Phase) has a very solid reputation and the M5A97 EVO (6+2 phase plus Digi VRM)in particular is built to OC. It has a very solid VRM setup. Try to find a thread about one burning up and then look at the hundreds of threads from people who are OCing on them. Even the "guru of VRM safety" here on OCN, xd_1771, (the co-author of the VRM info list linked above) recommends the M5A97. If you are on a VERY strict budget, then maybe go for "last years"(2 years ago really) tech and get an M4 board, if you can scrounge up another $10 get an M5 and you are at least up to date with the chipset and socket.

I have a 965 BE running on the M5A97 am3+ and the turbo setting on the board oc'd my cpu to 3.7ghz on stock heat sink with stable temps in prime95. So far this MoBo and cpu combo has been running really well. I would reccomend that MoBo to anyone on a budget. Good luck!

You can run that 965 in your M2N32 if you didn't know.
