New card decision please help!

Thread Starter
Having a hard time deciding just sent back a gtx 580 because I impulsed bought it when they lowered the prices, but wasn't really happy with the performance and wanted more than 1.5g vram with the choice of multi monitor set up.
So got a bit of a dilema do I go for a reference cooled 7970, 680 or this nice really cheap asus 7950 and oc. Or another choice is the new 7870 twin forz only £280 then crossfire in the future.

7970 sapphire reference = £410
680 msi reference = £430
7950 asus DirectCU II = £310
7870 twin forze =£280

Im really not sure here the the price performance I guess is looking to be the 7950 especially since it has a custom cooler and overclocking potential. But I hear its not much better than a gtx 580 which is pointless since I just sent back a 580 right tho the 3g vram is nice and multi screen support. Im not sure about the 7870 option either as I have never crossfired but im looking to branch out to things I have not done yet like water cooling eyefinity etc.
Oh im back to running my 6970 in the mean time while I decide so I am looking for a good performance leap over that so please help me decide.

Ill bump because I need an answer similar to this one. I would probably go for the 7970 or get a 7950 and get another one in the future.

@OP, I'd probably go for the 680 with 2gb Vram, or wait for the rumored 4gb one if you can, apart from me being slightly favored to Nvidia, I also enjoy their gimmicks such as FXAA, TXAA, PhysX and now Surround on a single card, the 680 OC'd is still faster than the 7970 OC'd based on a review I saw a few days which I cannot link back to cause I cant find it...

@Kavster12, Single monitor or Multi? Cant you go crossfire with 7970s if you can crossfire 7950's? Then again, price would be high, I'd pick Xfire 7950 if I were you.

Hmm thanks for the replies I just saw a 7850 can be had for £200 the twin forz edition I could grab 2 of them just now and get about 20-30 percent better performance than a 7970/680 right? and would finally get to try out multi cards. .

New cards and drivers and strait to Xfire? Have you researched on the forum about the people and some of the Good/Bad on running Xfire at all?

I would take either a 680 or 7970 over xfire for the price. At a starting point for both near 500 US that is. I would consider 1 card before 2.

Well sorry I have never went crossfire or sli before and was wanting to try it tongue.gif
I guess atm the best price performance is looking to be the asus driectcu 7950 but I wouldnt be able to crossfire it in future sadly becuase of the tripple slot cooler. I am leaning towards that tho or the 7970 the 7970 is a reference tho and I hate my 6970 becuase of the noise its so loud under load.

Create a custom fan profile for reference to kill the noise some. And I understand you have not done SLI/X-Fire. Get a reference 7970 and setup a custom fan profile or a 680 EVGA with a decent warranty and customer service. Set aside performance numbers and think about everything else. The space 2 cards require, power, idle usage vs 1 card or 2, required cables, drivers and compatibility, upgrade options, Eyefinity? or similar offered from Nvidia. Just throwing that out there.

Ye thankyou for the advice made me think I cba with the headache that comes with crossfire I would end up getting bad results and blaming the cards and just give up ty. I am leaning towards the 7950 at this point for the price, since its only 310 I could re sell it in a year for almost the same price. I remember picking up my 6970 for only 220 new while they were selling for over 300 and now im selling it for 200 after a year so I have lost nothing biggrin.gif.
Lets face it most cards only last a year. The 7950 should max everything its a decent upgrade from my 6970 I hope got good silent cooling, and a great price, with the money saved I can finally upgrade to the fabled i5 2500k gaming "legend" tongue.gif Tho my 22nd is coming up in a few months and I was hoping to get 3 24inch screens and sell my 27inch for eyefinity think a 7950 could do k on its own?

Resolution and settings would better determine that answer to a particular game.
