DDR 3 only showing single channel in BIO's

Thread Starter
Ok so I just put together another AMD build and at first everything was looking fine. Post on first try no freezing or anything like that.

What I have:

Mobo Asrock 990 fx extreme 3

CPU AMD fx-8120

Ram is Kingston hyperx blue ddr3-1333 8gb (2x4)

Antec 600W PSU

HDD WD Cavier Green 1tb.

Cooler is a cooler master Hyper 212 +

My problem I am having is that in windows I have what seems to be the common 8gb installed but only showing 3.99gb usable issue. So I started reading many forums and looking around as to what could cause this. The only thing I found that seems odd is when I look in the bios it shows the 8gb installed and in the correct slots but shows that it is running in single channel mode.

I check with CPU-Z and says that i am running in Dual Chanel Mode. This puzzles me some what.

What I have I done so far

Re-seated the memory 3 times and tried different slots. ASrock A1 and B1 or A2 and B2 is what activates dual channel.

Updated the bios

Checked the msconfig advanced settings they were all correct.

So I am hoping maybe some else has seen something like this. Everything seems to be working fine. On the windows performance test ram was a 7.5 so I am just looking for a little insight. Thanks.

well thats weird - have you updated everything? Bios, Windows etc?

I was having an issue with my machine, but I think it was due to the Cooler putting uneven pressure on the CPU, cause 1 of my sticks of ram to not register.

I dont think i have solved my problem yet, but I removed 1 stick and put it in a second channel, so I personally had to forfeit my tri channel for now =(

But atleast Im running 6 GB Again.

run the config through memtest, see if there could be a problem with one of the sticks directly.

Reset to all stock settings and update the bios if not done already, set your ram to XMP Standards and see if it is still reporting incorrectly in bios vs windows.

Then the final trick is to test it out, stress the computer with high end program/games running. With 4 GB i cannot run SWTOR and watch a video in windowed mode without windows telling me i need to close one or the other to run lol. but not with 6 GB, no issue.

If you are able to do a crud ton of things that are system heavy, then youw OS is boinked because its saying stupid stuff if it seems like the machine IS utilizing all that memory.

Id personally start fresh in all regards, Bios, OS, Test it out

are you runing 32 or 64 bit verssion of windows
post #4 of 12
Looks like 32-bit Windows to me. 4GB max supported on 32-bit, with only about 3.3GB usable. You need a 64-bit OS for more memory than that.

I had a similar problem. It was faulty RAM slots on my new sabertooth 990fx. The way to show this is too use only one stick and move from slit to slot. You will find you get post errors on one channel. I was confused too by it showing in BIOS as sworn sticks in the RAM page.

In my case both channels eventually failed. Up until that point I thought it was incompatible RAM so bought some more.

I rma'd the mobo and Asus replaced. Have to find time to reinstall.

Yeah that is the route I think I will be going as well. I have messed with a ton of hardware on different systems and short of running a memtest with this board it looks to have a bad slot somewhere. I did try putting both sticks in b1 and b2 and it would not even post at that moment. When I get home from work i plan to move the ram around 1 stick at a time, see the results then run memtest just to triple check the ram its self.
