[Legit Reviews] CPU scaling with HD 7950

Ultimately in the tests that we ran today you can easily get away with an entry level processor when using a high end graphics card like the AMD Radeon HD 7950. All of our tests had some very respectable numbers for gaming and we were able to play through the benchmarks with out an issue!

As I suspected, even entry level CPUs ($60 or $300?!) are sufficient for modern games at 60 fps +, what we really need is better graphics.
They should have tested some AMD CPUs though.

Guess I am glad I didn't buy an Intel system though and went with a cheaper llano set up, rather spend that money on a beefier graphics card.
AMD should do better marketing though for their APU/CPUs^^

Eh, how do you know it's just not the software taking advantage of all the CPU has to offer. (isn't that the case nowadays? I don't really know, just askin.)

I saw this LegitReviews article when it came out a few days ago. How can they even come to a conclusion when reviewing only 2 games? BF3 was only tested in Single Player too.... if they want to be taken seriously they need to throw in a lot more games in there, and specifically some CPU-heavy games like Starcraft 2 and Skyrim.

Even Tom's did a much better article: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,3120.html

The G850 shows pretty good results.

Fair enough, I think those two are the only recent games that is the case for, and because they are not optimised well...can only get 25fps min with sandy bridge at 4GHz??

IIRC, SC2 is only optimised for 2 cores, I imagine if they optimised properly and did the physics with PhysX or openCL via graphics it would fly at max settings on a top end GPU with low end CPU...but anyway, you make a good point sir.

Pretty short review. Would have been nice if the article was a CPU & OC scaling test

Incredible review. rolleyes.gif

Testing the GPU bound SP campaign of a MP shooter and a 2012 game whose graphics are barely a step above the original one in 2008.

How about testing some CPU bound games (SC II, Civ 5, GTA IV) or hell ones that are equally intensive like Witcher 2:

Clearly CPU doesn't matter rolleyes.gif

Try that with 3 or 4 7970s and an entry level cpu vs a 3930K... the FPS would be MILES apart. I know... because I just switched from a 2500k @ 4.7ghz to a 3930k @ 4.4ghz and saw a HUGE improvement in battlefield 3, as well as a GPU usage increase on all 3 cards.

well, CPU almost doesn't mater for any single-GPU, @1080p or lower, 60Hz, which is wast majority of us gamers...
