Tec... esky chiller?

random idea... but wanting to get a chilled esky?

was thinking about it.. would it work though?
with a low powered TEC ( not sure 20watts? )
have a few ideas like for camping.. 12v battery? haha
but all controlled voltage.. so can turn it up and down? again not sure what sized tec would be needed..


do you think this would work?


one reason for me.. i sometimes have a full fridge ( food ect ) and havnt got the cash spare at the moment to have a beer fridge running...
but something like this would just kinder sit in the shed ( 240v -> 12v converter -> voltage control unit ? ) and i could switch on throw in beer/drinks ect?
seeing as though i have a few esky's lying around.. and low powered TEC's are cheap

im guessing that i could either put it on the bottom or side with a heatsink ( old comp one? ) on the hot side.. and a decent sized alu plate on the cold? to spread the coldness?

There are hundreds on the market already.. $50 ready to go like this Travel Cooler

So yep it should work great

you should just do bag of ice mod to the cooler instead of tec

The approach is not even 1.0 but have you considered building some sort of evaporative cooler for that?
I've found some quick guide for a pot-in-pot but the overall concept could also work for a beer cooler. Doesn't kill your electricity bill, just needs water to evaporate.
If the thing is working good, maybe some reservoir could be slapped on to keep it running longer.

mmm could possiably work..
but was thinking 12v TEC with voltage control down to what ever volts i need depending on the TEC.
would use jack all power compared to a fridge/cooler anyway? ( 20watts? idk depends on TEC again )
and have a few other ways i can power it smile.gif if need be

would be nice in the boat haha

We used to have one for family camping trips - fair sized esky with a TEC / fan setup on top. Best thing was that you could reverse the polarity and it worked as a warm box, great for winter trips.

Now when I go camping I wrap my food in a towel and dip one corner in a pot of water. The water seeps into the towel and evaporates, cooling the food. Not the most amazing cooler in the world, but good for hiking trips.

You could set up something like a bong cooler, that can get water below ambient without TEC / compressors etc. Not sure exactly how you would make use of the cold water though, but worth a thought.

bumpaty bumpaty old thread..
just moved house and want a cooler in my room ( again )
but dont have my old bar fridge...

could setup a evaporation cooler ( like mosi said before.. )
but like a evap computer design ( horizontal though ) so have a small eski ( or tub? ) with the evaporation side of things.. then the bigger one doing all the protecting the beer/snacks?

any ideas how to keep it all cool? was thinking like a small rack down the bottom ( some wire mesh.. strongish stuff. being held up by 2 bits of wood ( 1 each side ) with some tubing down the bottom? or even just have cold water down the bottom? rather not have the drinks ect in the water though haha )mad.giftongue.gif
