Your sig shows 4.5 @ 1.36v which is pretty good. How did you notice the degradation? it stopped booting into windows, needed more vcore to run benchmarks or stress tests...etc. Reason I ask is because it is always helpful to others who just started overclocking or wondering about degrading CPUs. cheers.

It took a long time...

This - needed more vcore to run benchmarks or stress tests. First time I notice this by playing STALKER SOC. Was a BSOD, not 101 or 124, just something strange, like I have a problem with Firewire (1394), but it was a bug and a real problem was in CPU - Prime95 Blend immediately showed me x101. With + some VCORE all was good. And in a few months I've got the same. So went to 4,6 GHz @ 1,36V.

After that my CPU was unable to get 4,8 GHz even with 1,43V. But 4,7 @ 1,4 - sure.

First was 4,9 GHz @ 1,45 with VTT 1,35V and VSA 1,4V. Than 4,8 @ 1,42 or about, but still with VTT/VSA 1,35/1,4V. And it's only MB monitoring - real voltages was higher.

After that my CPU degraded even more. What was wrong? VCORE? I think no (to low even for 24/7). VTT/VSA? Looks like yes. And I have C2 chip. Now I have another 3930k and will use it with care: vcore max 1,4V, vtt/vsa - 1,15-1,2V and will watch it (during tuning) with voltmeter.

About MEM, always had 1,65-1,66V and PLL 1,8 or a little higher.

You killed your chip with WAY too much VTT/VCCSA voltage, not with your VCORE. It's pretty well known now that 1.2v is the absolute max for these two, while VCORE is fine at 1.5v although ideally you will want 1.4v or lower. I am running 4.87GHz with just 1.3425V, and have found that I can push my BCLK as high as it will go without having to increase any voltages for the increase in speed. I just set CPU clock skew to -1/2 and PCI-E Clock Skew to -10/20 and run as high as 108.6MHz (it'll do up to 110.6 but I don't need to).

With a good board and chip, and flexible memory, BCLK tweaking gives you extremely fine control, allowing you to overclock to the last possible MHz.

To prevent degradation, one must be very precise with voltages. This is the reason overclocking is only recommended for advanced or extreme users with a lot of experience. For those with limited knowledge, it is best to stay within standard to prevent hardware damage. Overclocking can take hours of trial and error testing to make sure a system is fully stable. Many people skip this, or simply do not have the experience or knowledge to do so, so that's where issues can occur. 1.65V has been the performance limit for DDR3 for quite some time. This will not change. Extreme users can even push upwards, but it all depends on the user's ability to configure settings properly. Personally, I have DDR3 1.65V running in old LGA 775 P45 motherboards and they are still overclocked and running perfectly.

Any computer or RAM can only OC as high as the user's ability. For those that want performance and lack experience, XMP Profile and easy OC motherboards can help, but only so much. if you are really interested, do a lot of reading to increase knowledge! thumb.gif

Cheers

When my first CPU was new, I was able to hit 4,8 with minimum ~1,42V. DDR2400 only with high VTT/VSA. 1,35/1,4 was in Geil 2400 X.M.P.
In those days was not enough information about C2 degradation and high vtt/vsa voltages was rated like OK in ROG OC guide for ASUS RIVE.
But I'm still not sure about high vcore voltage. Almost everyone will say - safe vcore is around 1,35V, maximum safe 1,4.

My new CPU is even worse for overclocking. Even with strap/bclk 125 I can hit only 4,75 GHz with voltage more than 1,42. 2400 MHz on memory it's just impossible.

X.M.P. (VCCSA voltage) :
Geil GET316GB2400C10QC - 1,4V
Kingston KHX24C11K4/16X - 1,3V
Corsair CMD16GX3M4A2400C9 - 1,25V

ASUS RIVE with older BIOS (don't know about now) sets high vtt voltage (about 1,35V) with appropriate frequency. So it's like I say that MB and MEM killed my CPU. Criminal conspiracy biggrin.gif

I'm not so upset that my first CPU is degraded, I'm upset than my second CPU is bad for overclocking and I'm just too tired and don't want to change it to a third one. So will use it at 4,7 GHz and 2133 MHz or 4,75 GHz and 2333 MHz (but for this I need a higher vcore/vtt/csa voltages).

2133 with tight timings is the sweet spot anyway, unless you are benching SuperPI or something like that. I have been testing a lot of different memory configurations to see their impact on performance, and going from 1600 to 2133 is a big jump but anything higher is really not necessary for day to dayuse. I am running 2284 9-11-10-27 1T (2133 multiplier with increased bclk) and it's stable with 1.145v on both the VTT1 and VCCSA (1.650v VDIMM). Any higher and I have to run too loose of timings or too much voltage for what I consider "24/7 safe".

EDIT: Running DDR3-2344 9-10-10-26 1T with 1.155 VCCSA, 1.155 VTT, and 1.660 vDIMM, with CPU @ 5.17Ghz using just 1.3725v (I must have a good chip!)

Hello!

Sure it's good to have 2133 with tight timings. But 2400 MHz - better tongue.gif

I've opened the box with a third 3930k. It's even better than my first degraded CPU. 4,8 GHz, 2400 MHz ( 9-11-11-31-1T) and under LinX (14,5 Gb of RAM) looks like stable (now I can see 1 hour, so after 2 hrs I think I will stop the test).

idle/LinX
vcore: 1,386/1,402
vtt: 1,104/1,107
vsa: 1,145/1,163
mem: 1,65
pll - 1,82

First three was measured by a cheapest Fluke voltmeter.

Also this chip have a good contact under a heat spreader (or a good temperature sensors), because left a right core got almost the same temp. My first and a second CPUs had a problems - right core (in a RealTemp) was much hotter under a good load.

Now I need to return that second processor to the store mad.gif
