An old PC needs to get on Wireless.

Hey

A friend of mine asked me to help him get his pc working with wireless internet.

His pc is rather old it seems:

His networking adapter is: cnet pro200 PCI Fast Ethernet adapter
Processor: Interl(r) Celeron (R) CPU 2.00 Ghz

Could find what mobo he has, tho I assume that's the most inportant thing here.

Could you recommend me some fix/purchase to get this pc receiving wireless signal/bluetooth? NOthing fancy is needed, just plain and basic solution to hook this pc with internet

I don't know much about these devices, specially when it comes to older models/pc's.

Thank you

Wifi PCI card, or a USB WiFi dongle.

Wifi card if it's stationary and transfer-rate matters.

USB for web browsing.

Thank you guys.

I would need it to be stationary for Desktop so I guess WiFi card/wireless adapter , and rather cheep one.
The internet will be used mostly for office stuff, no gaming, no heavy downloading, (all tho we have 100mb/sec internet.)

Socko, I checked that card and here in Estonia it costs not 50USD but 50 Euro, and that's to much right now.

Is there a cheaper solution you could recomend ? Striping it from all the other fancy extras leaving bare essentials.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=308 this is about 10 euros.

p.s.

Since the person who asked me this favor didn't speek much english our communication want very fluid, but he kept mentioning Blue tooth on top of the wireless internet.

Il talk to him about the bluetooth thing tomorow, but I believe Bluetooth is more of a file sending signal to transfer file from a device to another device, and even if so, does this function is possessed by Wireless adapters?

I use a USB Wifi dongle that I can plug into any machine and jump on a local Wifi hotspot. Personally I am not a fan of Wifi because it is an over air signal and can have interference and try to use a cable connection when possible.

I did some searching and couldn't find any combo cards that weren't for laptops.

I'd suggest going with USB keys for both the Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth. Any brand will do.

Good luck!

I'll admit Bluetooth is rather slow since the actual speed you will probably get is approximately 300kb/s which is about 2 megabits.

As for that do you have a Wireless Router you will be connecting to, do you have the model number and if it is N or G based?

Usually a basic Cisco Valet USB Adapter or a PCI Card should do fine.

If you can get the motherboard model we can see what type of expansion it has.
Considering it is a Intel Celeron it might still have the legacy USB 1.1 which will be a bottleneck.

Does it have to be wireless? I use one of these for my xbox 360 http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Powerline-200-Adapter-Kit/dp/B0036R9YA6/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1332796801&sr=1-11 and it works great. Flawless HD streaming on Netlfix, no lag in games, etc.. Another great thing about the powerline adapter is that it can be used with anything that has an Ethernet plug. I decided I'd rather spend $100 on a multi use adapter than $100 on a wirless adapters that only works for the 360.

There are some limitations though. It has to be plugged directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip).

Here are the technical details from amazon about it:

- Extends a high speed Internet connection to any power outlet
- Perfect for connecting HDTVs, Blu-ray players, DVRs, PCs and game consoles to your home network and the Internet
- Compact design with push-button security
- Just plug into any electrical outlet

You can definitely find cheap wireless cards out there, either PCI or USB. From my experience, the PCI option would definitely be the best choice if possible.
What operating system does this computer run? XP? You say old, I start thinking older than XP... hopefully not windows ME? lol
When getting a wireless adapter, make sure to pay attention to supported operating systems.

My recommended option for wireless (if space is not a tight issue) would be to get an old router, flash it with some dd-wrt, and turn it into an wireless gateway. This basically allows you to put the router next to the computer, the router picks up signal from your other router, plug the computer into an Ethernet port on the router... and... Internet wink.gif
This might take a little bit of skill/knowledge to do, so might not be the best choice for this.
