Need a nice RAID Card

Thread Starter
I'm a noob with this...kinda. Q_Q

I am building a RAID 6 storage server.

Used for:
Streaming movies, music, photos, docs, downloads, etc.
Access files over the net.
Rendering
VMs
What ever else I can think of...

OS: Windows Server 2008

Card requirements:
Expandability - I am starting off with ~6 2TB drives in RAID 6, 2 1TB drives in RAID 1 or 0, but plan on having more than 15 or so after prices drop.
Possibly transformation from RAID 6 to RAID 6 + hot spare
Cache - Not sure on how much...more the better? lol Possibly the ability to add more RAM cache to it
Battery Backup
2-4 SAS ports

Price Range:
$100-$500 about.

I am very very tempted to buy a Dell PERC 6/i...but i heard something about issues with 4k sector drives and there is a weird Intel incompatibility thing. And it is geting older now and has like no product support really lol.

I was looking at the LSI-9260-8i, but that price...lol

And how do these PCIe expanders work? o.0

I know I need an expander for when the array passes 8 drives, but how do I go about choosing one too?

Ummm...I think this is it so far. Fell free to ask more questions and let me know your thoughts. smile.gif

I love my LSI-9260-8i, it's real snappy. Got a friend who has a 9260-16i and says it's just as nice. Worth the cash if you want a serious storage array with the performance capabilities to handle 6Gb/s SATA III drives.

Thanks i was looking at the LSI-9260-8i, but I am not sure that I really need the SAS 6Gb/s and the price is a little high.

Make sure 3GB/s is your minimum. It could ensure that max data is passed if you have 6GB/s headroom.
Anyway Sean, read my PM's i sent you on the matter. thumb.gif

Well then. Got any good suggestions in my price range that can handle a good bit of drives in RAID 6?

Adaptec RAID 5805 2244300-R is pushing your budget lol

what i like about Adaptec cards is thier standing with VMWare, other than that they are great cards as i mentioned before..
the thing is though how these type of cards work, even other brands of similar nature.. These Controller Cards are designed for Storage boxes that have a hot swap bay back planes so you have like a couple of connectors feeding the back plane.. They can control more drives than you will ever need but comes down to server design

IDK if i was much help atm as trying to also get my son ready for school at the same time lol

Now why is the Adaptec RAID 6805 about the same price as the Adaptec RAID 5805? O_O

And apparently I can connect up to 256 SATA/SAS drives to this with expanders...now what kind of expander? O_O
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816103223

and this is competative to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118107

That could save me like $150 on the card and I know I need an expander anyways, but how do I find one? Do I just need to buy a case that has one already?

how adaptec name there models and set pricing im not sure of.. there isnt really anything different between the 6805 and 5805 unless it in the chip and cooler thinking.gif

I dont know much about LSI cards, the only reason its cheaper than the comparatable adaptec i can think of is better quiality components which they are known for.. but without knowing the brand other hearing about it (LSI) it is only speculation.. but as this is not a enterprise solution and the LSI is cheaper i would consider it xD

barebone cases can come with expanders in them already.. check first on the case you order but as to where to buy them obviously i have seen some i can recal on eBay but im sure you can find stores in the US that sell them

@OP

Since you want to support up to 15 drives (and possibly in the future) stay away from the PERC 6/i - it will only support 8 drives in its firmware, expander or no expander. The PERC 6/e will support more, but you will have to buy an expander in order to use drives internally with it. As for customer support, it's right here in this forum. biggrin.gif

For other options, hit eBay and look for either LSI or Areca cards. The Areca ARC-1680 series cards are very good, and are well supported in this thread.

If you want to know more about SAS Expanders, look here. Basically they work like Ethernet switches, and enable a RAID controller to see many more drives than what it has connectors for.
