My FX build

Thread Starter
Ok, so over the period of a couple of weeks, i've gotten some new parts, with a plan for a bigger/better rig.

My old rig was a 955BE with a Mechanical HDD, 2gb 6950 and 8gb of ram on a 880GM-USB3 motherboard. It suited its purpose, but with the 6950 on it, it was way too cramped. So i decided to upgrade.

With a couple of parts still on the way (Mostly ram) This is what i've gotten so far.

Corsair TX 750 Watt PSU, You'll see it in the photos, the cables were a huge problem, since the case has no cable management frown.gif

I bundled all the excess cables and stuck them in the 5.25inch bays.

Next we have a FX 6100 that i've had running on 4.5ghz with a Coolermaster EVO, But now its under a 212+ (Decided to keep the Evo with the 955)

Next we have the fantastic motherboard, the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7. Such a large board, its perfect for what i need it for!

Then we have the case, a seemingly ordinary NZXT Black apollo. Its a little small for my liking, but i ran out of funds so i had to use what i already had.

Then to top it all off, A 60gb OCZ SSD. (its an older one, picked it up second hand)

I only had a couple of problems with this build, The previous owner of the case decided to turn the power switch into a Molex connection, thus removing the little black pins. Unfortunate, but i hate dealing with all those connections, usually when i build a pc and it doesnt work, they'll be the first things i check.

Now for some "In the process photos!"

Unfortunately, i couldnt put the ram in the right slots frown.gif Its currning in slot 1&2 because the heatsink for the cooler extends over the 3&4th slot. It wouldnt be a problem except the ram has heatsinks on it aswell. But yeah, its currently only running on 4gb of ram, because the other 4 i had to leave in the 955 rig.

Now a quick question, It says the board is AM3+ ready, does that mean i wont need to update the bios?

Cheers and thanks for looking at my build thread biggrin.gif

yeah I don't think is a great idea blowing all the hot air from the CPU to the video card which already usually run hot.

I would agree with the fellas suggesting turning the cooler vertical. What dimm slots do you need to use to be dual channel as opposed to single channel? Perhaps a few more fans on the case could be added. Exhaust at rear?

The video card runs pretty cool actually,45 degrees idle with fan on 25% gets to about 65degrees under full load on BF3 and fans only about 40%

Unfortunately, I can turn it sideways, because of the setup of the Heatpipes coming out of the actual base plate, the mounting bracket is spread too far wide.

I've got the fans, In the process of getting a splitter so i can run them all off the same header, and have speed control on them. I need to use either all slots, or 1/3 or 2/4 to run dual channel.

Not really an upgrade? It's a complete downgrade in every way. The IPC is considerably lower on the FX line compared to the Phenom II line. Not to mention they draw massive amounts of power as well, so there's no reason to go for an FX chip, regardless.

TBH, i'm not really looking for criticism on my build choice. No offence, but i know what i've gotten into with it. However if you can shed some light on my current predicament, please feel free.

Ok, the funky green colour was the monitor....Not happy about that frown.gif

Still no idea on the Red LED :S

PS, OS has just completed installation.
