Blu-Ray Software Problems

Thread Starter
Just set up my new computer today, and have the:

S-ATA LightScribe BD-ROM/DVD Writer Blu-Ray combo : SH-B123

And the software that came with it is from CyberLink, the PowerDVD 9 and Blu-Ray Disc Suite.

When I try and play the Blu-ray "Avatar" on my computer it comes up with "There is a disc with an unsupported format in drive D:".

I've tried updating PowerDVD to the most recent patch, and installing k-lite codec finally to try and get something to work. Yet even in k-lite I get the error "Cannot render the file"

Just wondering if you guys have any insight on what I can do to fix these problems.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Sounds like a hardware problem. Do you have any blu-rays from pre-2009 movies? My blu-ray drive came with power dvd 9 and it won't play anything released since late '09, which is unfortunately most of my blu-rays. My drive/computer will still recognize the blu-ray disc regardless of the software, I just can't watch them

I just tried it with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, as it's my oldest blu-ray to no avail. I can see them and recognize that they are blu-ray, it just comes up with those errors.

Should I maybe download the trial of powerDVD 10 then and see if that fixes my issues?
I can't find the website I found, but basically 9 and 10 are no longer supported so any new blu-rays will most likely not work. You'll have to get 11 or 12, but 11 is already halfway through it's product life. There's a free 30-day trial of 12 on the cyberlink website. They support the software with updates for something like 2 years. They won't let you upgrade from 9 to 12, have to pay full price.

Stupid question.. Have you installed whatever drivers came with it? Firmware? If not I would the trial. Don't pay for anything though. There is rumor, not sure if it is set yet, that VLC Media Player will support BD playback with it's next update and a couple of other free software programs as well. Just something to keep in mind. thumb.gif

yeah I'll try the free trial of 12 first before anything. I have installed the drivers and the firmware is up to date. I'm always reluctant to spend money on things so I'll keep that in mind wink.gif

I'll post again after I try the trial and everything.

Aha. I was right. Try VLC Media Player. It now supports bluray. Definitely worth a try.

After 485 million downloads of VLC 1.1.x versions, VideoLAN and the VLC development team present VLC 2.0.0 "Twoflower", a major new release.
With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs, 2.0 is a major upgrade for VLC.
Twoflower has a new rendering pipeline for video, with higher quality subtitles, and new video filters to enhance your videos.
It supports many new devices and BluRay Discs (experimental).
It features a completely reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces make VLC easier than ever to use.

Be sure to run the .m2ts files too and nothing but that. You won't have the menus and you might have to click through 2-3 until you find the actual movie one but it'll run perfectly.

I've run dozens of blu-rays through VLC that way and have never had a hiccup.

Be sure to configure VLC for optimal quality too. (openGL, higher cpu priority, post-proccessing(the one buried in the advance features), yadif(2x), etc#
