Purchases complete - wide open budget: 3 way 680s, X79, CaseLabs M10

Thread Starter
Hello all, I'm looking for unbridled advice on a new build.

Currently I have a big *external* water cooling setup (MO-RA3) with a 1500w PSU that I'll be reusing. 3 Alienware 2310's round out the hardware I expect to reuse.

My current GTX590 and i7 920 @ 4ghz with 12gb memory is good, but I'd really like it to be considerably better.

Goal: I want BF3 ultra settings @ 5760 x 1080 with 3D vision turned on (motion blur off). Frame rates should be smooth. This rig is used for *nothing* other than BF3 and Sim racing. Budget is not a problem, but I don't care to split hairs on the absolute latest processor, reasonable bang for the buck (but higher end) is good for me. i.e. I doubt a xeon proc will do me good.

Acquired:
  1. Case: CaseLabs M10 + Pedestal
  2. Radiator: External Watercool MO-RA3
  3. PSU: Silverstone ST1500
  4. Monitors: 3 x AlienWare 2310
  5. Mobo: X79 Asus Rampage IV Extreme
  6. Cooling: RP-45x2 and two pumps
  7. HD: SSD Samsung 830 (low space requirements considering it only has a few games and no media)
  8. Processor: i7-3820 (replace with Ivy Bridge E later this year)
  9. Ram: CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133.
  10. Blocks: Holy EK batman! Mobo, Memory, CPU, 680s. EK should sponsor this thing!
  11. GPU: 3 x EVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC+ w/Backplate

Debate list:
  1. Sound: Thinking about onboard for mic and external amp/dac, suggestions?

Thank you in advance for the advice.

EDIT: I have updated the list based on advice in this and other threads so some of this conversation can be fragmented. Thank you all for the help. I'm still researching, but the mobo, processor, ssd, ram all seem to be solid choices. Ivy Bridge is assumed later if I can't get one within the next 4 weeks.

EDIT2: Purchased. The only item left is the external dac/amp.

Just curious... does it have to be a Z77 motherboard? If you plan on Doing 3 way SLI and a Sound Card i Recommend you go the X79 route + 3820. However IF you plan on doing 2 cards only the Z77 will suffice.

As far as the Rest i would get a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD. And if you want to WC i suggest you go to much bigger case. something like a HAF X, Switch 810, or a 800D

@shiftwig113 - I don't have a requirement for a Z77, I just thought it was the latest/most capable.

I am already watercooling with the current case, just curious why you suggest I go with a bigger one? My reservoir is in the 5.25" bays and my radiator is far separated, so I have plenty of extra room right now (granted I am not in an SLI setup)

EDIT: It looks like I was wrong about the Z77, I definitely want to go with the better chipset. I'll have to read up a bit more about them.

It's not about being newer... They all are part of the "7 series Motherboards" Z77 is Mainstream, X79 is Enthusiast
X79 has 40 Native PCI Express 3.0 Lanes. Which Means you can run your cards at x16, x16, x8
Z77 has 16 Native PCI Express 3.0 Lanes. Whcih Means you can run your cards at x8, x4, x4.

other differences is that z77 has native usb 3.0. (which doesn't mean much since ALL x79 boards sold today have USB 3.0 added via 3rd party chipset)

ANd for 3 Cards + sound card your case will be pretty crammed. An average Mid Tower case has only 7 expansions slots. and A lot of X79 boards are a little bigger than ATX to fit more slots so its always good to have headroom if you want to go with a bigger board to fit all your components.and cool it adequately.

Being that you already have a gtx590 your next build should revolve around it. 2 gtx590 s in 4 way sli will crush all curent games even in 3d surround.

You will want a x79 board so that each gpu has at least 8 PCIe lanes. Your x79 board will also have 8 dimm slots for ram. This will be great for creating a ram cache for your ssd. I know the x79 asus boards have this feature. The 4k I/o are off the charts using a ram cache.

The i7 3820 will be fine unless you really want to spend money.

Option A: Wait for 4/3 way sli capalble z77 motherboards since they will offer you the space you want. #pcie for gpus and 1 for sound card. Along that wait, we will be able to see if Ivy Bridge handles multiple cards better o the same as sandy bridge.

Option B: Get a high end x79 mobo + 3930k and a big motherboard (asus RIV-E,RIV formula, msi bigbang x2, gigabyte ud7). All these motherboard have the layout for your setup.

Option C: Wait. We still dont know how would a "REFERENCE" gtx 680 oc under water. The card now is limited by driver/hardware on a power consumption level. So if you get 3 gtx 680s, you might not find suh use to put them under water (unless your looking for sound levels).

I suggest getting an x79 motherboard with K or 3920 cpu, and then replace them wih Ivy-Bridge E when it comes out (late this year). This way you will have a fast setup with alot of comfort in compatibility.

About the gtx 680 you might want to wait for the 4g versions/non-reference versions, what is gk110-112, what will they perform...etc

We dont want you to waste your money on a setup that will be outperfomed by alot. So it all depends on you, are you willing to go through such an investment knowing that there might be things better in a few days? Or can you hold off a few days, maybe weeks, so that we can all see what gtx 680 trule performs and how well it oc-s, while drivers mature.

If i were you id go the x79 way.

With 3D surround you'll be using way more memory than that 590, not that the 590 won't work but it'll be smoother with more vram. I'd say get the 4gb FTW model of 680.

x79 Mobo- with decent processor
2x 680 4gb model
SSD is a must for a high end system like that. I personally don't think RAID is necessary, just one larger sized one works. 256gb or so should hold windows and games fine.

Updated the original post with some decisions and research, still gathering information.

Ivy Bridge is later this year right? I'll be doing this soon as my current mainboard is having some issues.

Any expectations on announcements for the higher end 680s?

EDIT: I just saw the post on the FTW. I'll look at that more.

EDIT2: Ivy bridge in april: http://www.pcworld.com/article/252948/intel_ivy_bridge_chips_launch_dates_leaked.html

go triple SLI on the 680s. I have one, and its amazing (I don't have the money for more). and disregard what others said about the Cooler Master Cosmos II Case being too small... its not. BUT I can recommend the CaseLabs cases, they are made for watercooling so give them a look. Here's a review by TTL.

X79 chipset is the way to go, unless there is a truly High-End Ivy Bridge version coming out. For SSDs I recommend 2 Intel 520 SSDs simply because they are much more reliable than the competition.

I hope this helps a little.
