I had a 6950, and even overclocked to 1 GHz it easily lost to my GTX 570 in 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark11. Granted, it wasn't shader unlocked, but the unlock represents only a small performance increase

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=518

According to my link above.. the 570 is tied for the most part with the 7850 or beats it by a bit in many BM's.. both cards cost the same, but the 570 I'm looking at has 500MB more memory, which would be nice for modding Skyrim, for instance...

Should I look into the 6950? Or stick with the 570 2.5GB?

**Edit**

I looked into the 6950 - I can get one for $250 which saves me $100 but it also is slower by about 15 FPS in many games... and the 6950 only has a 1GB frame buffer which is something I'm highly interested in upgrading because I know my Skyrim mods are raping my 1GB of memory.

I'm leaning on the side of a 570 still.. maybe a 7850 but from what I see the 570 higher FPS in more games than not as well as CUDA and PhysX (not a huge deal but something to consider) and 500MB more frame buffer for the same price...

7850 is not worth it for $250. If $250 is your budget, get a used GTX 570.

If you want to spend $350, get the 7870 over the 2.5GB GTX 570. That extra 500MB is really not worth it for a slower card (which the 570 is compared to a 7870).

Lol...

I wish I had a 570, a 6950, and a 7870 in front of me to BM.

I'm honestly not interested in a 6950 - main reason being that my 1gb buffer isn't cutting it for Hi Res mods with the 6850 I currently have - the 6950 won't be much better in the textures dept.

I'm between the 570 and the 7870. If I got a 570 it would be the 2.5 GB one which I know is overkill for 1080P right now but next year I HIGHLY doubt that will be the case...

If I get a 7870 2GB it's $10 (not really a big deal) more, 500MB less frame buffer (not really a big deal) and slightly better performance from the 7970 over the 570 for most games except for SC 2 which I do play a lot but both cards are more than sufficient so that's null and void I suppose.

It's looking like the 7870 - but I'm still torn.

How is this for a plan - wait four weeks until I actually have the money to buy - Look that the evga 2.5GB 570 which is $360 shipped right now, and compare with a 7870 2gb at that time - whichever is cheaper will be the one I go with.

http://www.hwcompare.com/12208/geforce-gtx-570-vs-radeon-hd-7870/
The 7870 is significantly lower wattage which will save me money over time - and is also much better at AA which I like...

The lack of PhyX on the 7870 bothers me some, but I also see PhysX as a gimmick and I don't think Nvidia should be rewarded for paying off game designers to be lazy with their physics.

Both cards are about $350 right now for the ones I want.. If I buy a card for over $250 I want it to be at least 2GB. Price isn't the issue, it's performance (raw performance over performance per watt is more important to me).

I'm now leaning on the side of the 7870 over the 570.

I would pony up for the 7870. It''s worth the extra $100.

If not, get whatever is cheaper of 570/6950. (If 6950, try to get an unlcoked/unlockable one.)

I'm going to compare power consumption now - over time wattage can really add up on an electric bill - I suspect the 7870 is lower wattage.

Just bring back the idea of HD6850 CF for a brief moment.

Tom's commented regarding the no scaling in his chart of StarCraft 2.
Quote:
StarCraft 2 is clearly bottlenecked by our host platform.
So, this should have little to do with CF/SLI scaling.
(source: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crossfire-sli-scaling,2742-8.html)

Legitreviews did show HD6850/6870 scaling for StarCraft 2. See chart below. The scaling for HD6850 CF is about 56% at 1920x1200.
(Driver used was 10.10 while Tom's was 10.7 Beta)

700

(source: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1445/12/)

Of course, one chief strength of HD6850 CF is the price.

Ah, I didn't realize there was a 2gb 6950.

So the 6950 2gb should be about the same as a 570 2.5GB or a 7870 2GB only it's about $100 cheaper...? (Granted I could get a cheaper 570, but I'm looking at the 2.5GB)

I didn't catch that.. thanks for this.

I agree the 6850's are a very nice combination - and a nice option since I already own one..

I guess I'm just worried by all the crap I see about xFire and SLI issues, microstutter, freezing, driver bugs, etc etc - combine that with my girl needing an upgrade from her 4550, and I think I'm best to just get a nice single GPU solution now. Thanks for the info though, nice to see that. Also, you have a valid argument, I'm just put off by any issues from multi card setups I guess - however rare they may or may not be.

Well, from what I have seen it is even better, but I've only ever owned the 6950. 996gt2, having owned both, thinks the 570 is superior. It may be, but if you can pick up a 6950 2gb, unlock the shaders, and OC it for $100 less, you are good to go IMO. I run BF3 on Ultra with only MSAA disabled, and it runs great.thumb.gif

Thanks dude, +rep.

Looking for a 2GB or better for now, though. I'll keep an eye on there for one! Probably going to buy new but it's nice to know that's there for selling parts/for my backup systems.
