Finally upgrading -- Mr. P. needs help!

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
Hey guys, finally upgrading from P45 and Core 2 Quad in the next week or two, going to P67. I need some build advice.

Here are my desired specs:

i5 2500k ($180 @ Microcenter)
P67 motherboard, SLI/CFX capable, at least one PCI slot, decent overclocker, in ~$150 range
16GB DDR3 1600 CL9 (either native or OCable to that or higher), max $150
Decent heatsink that will let me hit at least 4.5GHz and is fairly quiet, less than $100

Prefer to shop from TigerDirect, Amazon, Microcenter, and Fry's (NO NEWEGG).

Whatcha got?

$500 is really the max, and I don't want to go over $200 on the motherboard, preferably $150-$175.

I want 16GB of RAM because it's dirt cheap at the moment and I'll probably hang onto this system for at least 3 years.Suck to only get 8GB now, then have to buy another 8GB at $100+ in 2-3 years. Plus I'll probably make 6-8GB into a RAMdisk to screw around with.

P67 because it's usually cheaper than Z68. wink.gif

P67=More reliable than z68 imo..With p8p67 pro being a zero-problem motherboard..even with the original BIOS..Only 1 problem..Vcore reads .10 off...account for that..and There's No faults to it.

You are mistaken. It won't be for another 5-10 years before RAM needs go to 16gb for gaming.

And that's what they said about 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB. And in each case it took no more than 3 years before more RAM became necessary. Besides, I multitask, as in have 1-2 games minimized in the background while having 5-10 other applications including Firefox with >10 tabs. And if I consistently have memory left over, I can make a RAMdisk.

If I have memory, I use it.

The jump from 8GB to 16GB will be huge, so it will take longer for it to be needed, so that is not a good argument you're making.
