GTX 480 gives bad fps in TF2

Hello everyone. I have been reading these forums and using "search" for the past 30 min, but can't seem to find anything which could help me to solve my problem.

I have a problem with my ingame fps when I play TF2. If I remember correctly it just appeared 1-2 months ago and I have no clue whats going on.

So the thing is that my fps drop hugely! Even playing on 2fort with 10vs10, whenever I come out and look at the mid bridge my fps drops sometimes even below 90. This happens on every map.
Also when I join a server I see that my fps are 30-40 and they raise till 200+. This didnt happen before thats for sure.

When fps drops under 100, its really noticeble, because I have played with 180-300 for ages.
So obviously I should not have any problems getting 150 fps constantly in game such TF2.

Theres no processes running on my background. No antivirus, no firewall problems. All my drivers are up to date, and I also tryed with older drivers aswell. My wires are properly connected on my video card and I can run any game at high res. I defragmented my hds and tf2 cache.

I have googled things up, but havent found a solution how to fix this or what may be causing it. Hopefully anyone can give me something. I also red that some people said how this gtx480 dont like valve/tf2/source engine. But then again - I used to have everything running just fine.

My specs:

i5 650 @ 3.2 GHz
6GB RAM
64bit win7
GTX 480 (currently at 1125 voltage / 818 core / 1636 shader clock / 1902 memory clock)

Absolutely no difference between 1920x1080 or 1280x1024

I gave my old comp years ago to my little brother and it had Athlon and radeon, with ram only 2GB and still that junk gives average fps a bit worse than this.. When it should be completly different case.

Please help me out if anyone has any ideas ?

Is that OC'ed? My GTX480 runs fine on TF2....

Try uninstalling your drivers, rebooting and reinstalling them.

If thats OC'ed, you might have an unstable overclock.

Good luck! thumb.gif

I overclocked it a little after experiencing this problem, so overclocking is not the problem.

- I have tryed older drivers with a clean install, and still no luck
- there is no dust in my computer, which may cause a slower perform
- I even run the game in directX level 81, no effect at all
- prefer maximum performance - no luck

p.s. Kolmain how much fps u get with what res/graphics ?

This is horrible. Im getting less than 100 fps when I come out in the open.

I noticed you have a Clarkdale. The Clarkdale bridges the difference between a Wolfdale and Nehalem CPUs, so your best bet is to OC the Clarkdale as high as you can. PhII's don't beat Nehalem/Lynnfields clock-for-clock, but they OC enough to perform fairly well when compared to stock Lynnfields.

Actually I'm curious how your performance was 1-2 months ago.

Whoa, did you edit your first post? doh.gif

I didnt realize that your "low" FPS rates were <100FPS..... thats crazy high for me lol (Somone who has a 60Hz monitor)

Dunno then, maybe TF2 isnt optimized enough to run that high?.... sorry bud confused.gif

Go intro nvidia control panel, add the TF2 .exe and change "power management mode" to "prefer maximum performance" and see if it helps.

mine sometimes drops to under 100 as well. and I am heavily overclocked. Valve constantly releases updates for TF2. TF2 is a CPU heavy game, not soo much GPU. A lot of the extra crap they add is CPU intensive which is why the FPS keeps dropping over time. Mine have dropped as well. I am steady 299FPS maxxed out and sometimes it drops below 100.

My settings already were on MAX PERFORMANCE, but I tryed that too - no luck.

my gtx480 is overclocked at the moment and yet still my fps drops under 100 when I'm out in the open. (voltage 1125 / core 851 / memory 1964) BF3, Syndicate, etc are working fine...

- its either a CPU problem
- not enought powersupply ?

Hahah yeah I didn't realize he meant low as in "suddenly dropping to 90FPS". Doesn't really sound like a significant problem then...it is what it is tongue.gif

@prkl08 - AMC, a SB user, has also chimed in with his results and even with his setup he will occasionally see dips below 100FPS. As with any Source game, if you want to raise your min FPS, you need to OC...but considering what AMC has said, some FPS drops may simply be limitations of the Source engine itself :|

After playing 10+ years with fps below 200 it is a big deal to play under 100 fps smile.gif Also having a crt monitor which pulls out 100hz does matter, even though I don't currently use it.
It might be the Source game problem, but how come I can make my fps stay at 900 playing cs:s and steady 250 with all maxed out on 1920x1080.
