with your resolution, you can play it even at very high settings. just turn off Advanced DOF and Tessellation.

i agree entirely with you, this game, even on max, looks like crap.

theres nothing special about its graphics, the monsters look like trash, talk about the need for a hi-res texture mod, then again, those would just anally bottleneck the crappy engine even more.

No. I can agree that the art direction could be considered bad (grey and brown hues only) or that the game runs bad for something so linear with such little room to move around in (compared to Crysis which is almost completely open), but it doesn't have "low res" textures. This game has great stock textures for a 2010 game and better stock textures than most games released today (see Mass Effect 3). Metro 2033 shadowmaps are 9 times the resolution of Crysis shadowmaps.

Crysis 2 stock textures for example turned out to actually be half the resolution of Crysis textures, but the HD mods thankfully corrected that.

Also, console versions have worse graphics than the PC version just like practically all other AAA games released since forever. Console resolutions are lower, they lack DX10/11 features and they run at 30 FPS as opposed to the 60 FPS most PC gamers demand. A console playing Metro 2033 is probably doing roughly 1/6 of the work a PC has to do to output to twice the resolution (1080p for PC vs. 720p for console) with twice the texture resolution, tessellation, and DOF. Drop down Metro 2033 to 720p on your PC and tell me how it runs. Above 30 FPS? Better than a console.

Lol, Metro 2033 is famously not a console port. Compare the console v. to the PC version. From the wiki: "The PC version includes exclusive features such as DirectX 11 support and has been described as "a love letter to PC gamers" because of the developers' choice 'to make the PC version [especially] phenomenal'."

ADoF is the only feature that's really coded crappy in that game. Don't use it, and the game performs in a manner commensurate w/how good it looks.

The perf hit from 4xMSAA is a little ridiculous as well, but it's not uncommon to see that in game engines like this one. For example, the hit for 4xAA in Stalker Clear Sky is very similar ... huge. Pretty sure it's the deferred rendering that both use. I think it's the kinda thing where it's 'software' AA rather than Hardware AA as is supported in many other games, but that's just a guess on my part wink.gif

I agree that SOME things in the game look kinda crap (people and monsters primarily), but the lighting and shadows in the game are 2nd to none, and the particle effects are also excellent.

AFA the game goes, meh ... when I need my 'Russian post-apocalyptic shooter' fix I'd rather play Shadow of Chernobyl for like the 15th time than play Metro for just the 2nd time. The Zone > the Moscow Metro, anyday wink.gif

When I play it on my 470's in SLI, I go all maxed EXCEPT I use AAA and no ADoF, and it looks awesome, and runs perfectly smooth throughout.

This game is incredibly hard on GPUs. I'm playing through it again and I still get annoying FPS drops with two GTX680s with maxed settings in 1080p. It's definitely playable, but not silky smooth.

I know everybody says it's bad coding, but I don't believe it is a result of unexpected bad coding. I don't know why but Sometimes I perceive they purposely make these types of games to earn money with blazing fast rate, I am talking about collaboration of game makers with GPU manufacturer. I have seen higher scores with sli 480s, averaging in 50s and going into 60s, you have a heavy oced sli 470s, isnt 36 fps alittle low.
