ASUS FanXpert 2 on Z77 Motherboards

Does anyone know if this works with 3 pin fan headers as well as 4 pin? Does the system regulate the fan voltage or just allow you to dynamically control the pwm?

I use AP-15s, so this feature is useless to me on the new motherboards unless it works to regulate the voltage down as well.

Thanks

It will be able to control the fans IF the header the fan(s) are plugged into can control the fans via voltage and not PWM only. My Z68 board has two CPU headers which can only control via PWM. 1x PWM chassis header that can control with PWM or Voltage, 1x 3pin chassis header control via voltage only, and 2x PWR header with no control what so ever.

BTW, I love your motherboard. Sexy!

That's z68, not the z77 Sabertooth. Fan Xpert 2 is new with Z77.

Does anyone else know? I must know if the board allows voltage control.

It's the same concept with all motherboard. A 4pin PWM cannot control a 3pin fan Via PWM. It has to do it through voltage modulation. Fan Xpert (1 and 2) is just software that is able to communicate to the motherboard. Nothing more or less. The only want to find out is to plug the fan in and see if it will control the speed or not. If the Fan stay at 100%, then it cannot control via voltage modulation because it lacks the necessary circuitry to do so.

I agree with all of that. I know how PWM modulation works. I'm wondering if the ASUS z77 boards can actually do voltage regulation on their fan headers or not. If not, I may look elsewhere and get a fan controller. If so, I'm definitely going with ASUS.

Try shooting Asus an E-mail. On a different note, I asked how much current the 3 and 4 pin heads can handle and it's 25w. o.O 25watts?! Holy crap! If you decide to go with a fan controller, then I suggest either one of these. They're pretty awesome.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was actually looking at picking up the new Lamptron when it comes out: http://rigmods.com/wp/blog/tag/lamptron-fc10/

I guess I'll have to email ASUS>

I went the the ASUS site and used the compare feature and found that yes, the Sabertooh x77 does have Fan Xpert 2. The z77-V, z77-V Pro, and z77-V Deluxe also have this feature. However, a step down from these to the z77-V LK has Fan Xpert+. I am not sure of the difference between Fan Xpert+ and Fan Xpert 2, and honestly I don't know of the advantage of either of them over a program like Speed-fan, if anyone wanted to comment on that.

SpeedFan doesn't allow you to create a custom profile based on temps of any of the temp sensors on board the mobo. Additionally, you can't control the speed with SpeedFan if the fans you're suing aren't PWM. With FanXpert 2, I'm able to control 3-pin fan via a custom profile that takes a customizable percentage of any of the 10+ sensors onboard to passively control the speed of the case fans. It's fantastic. (get it?)
