Help me find a new phone.

Thread Starter
I need to buy a new mobile phone soon, as my sony ericsson satio is starting to behave weirdly.
Things I'm looking for:
  1. Good for playing music
  2. Max size, would be slighlty bigger than my current phone
  3. Max price £200 or £25/ month on contract
  4. Decent camera would be a good

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Are you able to give me info on what carriers you would be looking at for the contract or what sites/stores you'd be buying the phone from? I'm from Australia and have no idea on how much phones or contracts cost in the UK. If you can give me a hand with that I'll be more than happy to help you.

Others may say differently, but I vote for the Samsung Galaxy S2. It is almost a year old now, but it is a solid performing phone that is going to be supported for quite some time. I LOVE mine and I even have the crippled at&t version. Anything more high end than that and you are looking at a much higher price tag (the GS2 is already a bit over your price). It fits your other qualifications quite nicely though:

Music - It doesnt have the BEST audio chip, but with apple earbuds and my low end $100 cans it works great. If you are an audiophile, you might want to be carrying a separate audio device anyways.
4.3" Screen size - I came from using an ipod touch as my primary email and media device (3.5") and seeing as you are coming from a similar size scren you will really like the extra space. Strangely enough, it doesnt take up that much more space in the pocket
Price - £2 above what you were looking at
Camera - Absolutely stellar performance. It is quick and has great built in features that really make for a high quality image (and video)

Yeah, the Galaxy SII is a pretty good option. It can be had for less than £200 in good condition used, and I think I've seen £25 contract offers, although they may be £27 or so.

I can't even get into the O2 website being outside the UK :\

Plus the other sites you listed don't really seem to offer anything great, or cheap.. I saw the SGSII for 31 pounds a month (wow that's nearly $50 AUS) on Orange with only 700MB data. Is that cheap for you guys?

With your budget of about 200 pounds outright purchasing I don't think you're quite going to get a good dual core phone new, who really wants to buy a second hand phone? I'm leaning towards recommending you to buy the Xperia Arc off an Ebay store. I had a quick glance and they appear to be about 160 pounds posted. The Arc runs very nicely and I personally think Sony's UX is much nicer than the TouchWiz rubbish Samsung paste over their phones and will overall be a nicer experience for you.
The Arc has a very nice screen at 4.2", a great camera and if my old SE X10 is anything to go by (and every Sony phone I've owned for that matter), audio quality will be great. Plus the design is much more attractive and nicer than the plain old SGSII.

There's my 2cents.gif

If you don't like the look of the Arc then I can look around for another sub 200 pound Android device for you.

What is wrong with buying a second hand phone? I don't get it when people don't want to buy second hand stuff, some of us can't afford to go out and buy the latest and greatest brand new, and we can still get it by buying used. I can see not wanting to buy used clothes or something, but a phone is different.

£31 a month for an SII with 700MB sounds about right to me depending on the calls and texts you get (I'd assume unlimited texts and 500+ minutes). I mean the Galaxy SII is still almost £400, so it's not a terrible offer.

T-Mobile and Three don't seem to have any offers on the SII under £30 (without paying up front of course) but O2 have some that could be suitable for you - you haven't mentioned what kind of monthly allowances you're after. There's a £21.50 tariff with 250MB, 200 minutes, and 250 O2-O2 minutes. The £27.50 tariff gives you 500MB, 300 minutes, and 500 O2-O2 minutes. Both have unlimited texts and the free phone, with a 24 month contract.

Of course, the Arc might well be a better bet for you and it's cheaper too. It will probably give you better sound and camera quality which are two things you mentioned wanting. I recommend heading into a shop at some point and trying out some of the phones that people have recommended to see what feels better to you. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference with a lot of things.

Mate, check the Sony Xperia S out. You can get it for £25 a month and it is fantastic. 12 MP camera, beautiful to look at, really nice UI. I'd really recommend it.
