Bluray and Dvd ripping and storage questions.

Thread Starter
So I am in the process of building a budget HTPC. I have found a Bluray/dvd ripper. I will probably be using DVDfabHD because it is free and seems to do the trick. I havent decided on whether to use handbreak or RipBot264. ( Any suggestions on this?)

So my questions are.

1. Ive heard that a bluray movie will take up anywhere from 4gb - 10gb. Is there any way to reduce this size while still keeping 1080p and surround sound audio quality? would HB or RB264 work better for this?
2. After Ive ripped the bluray or dvd and made a location for it, can I delete the rip to save storage space?
3. Which format is better MKV or MPEG4?
thanks,

The Ninja

First of all, you're getting into a very grey area that OCN would rather not be in for legal reasons. This thread may or may not be violating the DMCA, and therefore, talking about dvd/blu-ray ripping is frowned upon here.

Blu-rays, with the original 1080p strem + hd audio can eat up anywhere from 20-40GB of space, easily. If you compress the 1080p stream, you can bump the final size down to 7-15GB.

Also, MKV is not a format, but rather a container, just like AVI isn't a format, but rather a container.

If you compress your blu-rays, they will be by default h.264 (which is mpeg-4).

As to what container (mp4 vs mkv vs others), i personally use mkv as my default container of choice because of it's versatility and ease of use.

I didnt know this is a touchy subject.

So if i compress them do i loose quality or im just compressing them?

And why do you say MKV is a better container?
