NEED A BUILD - AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE - INTEL CPU - QUIET - 7970

Thread Starter
Well I'll be building it in 15 days, getting ideas together though. I want as small as possible, decent performance etc. Debating whether I should wait for IVY due to power consumption (I want silence and DECENT performance).

This will be a lan/mobile rig so I'd like small and quiet. I'd like to get the CPU to 4.6-4.8 ghz to ensure no performance bottleneck on the GPU at all. I'm thinking a 2600k?

I need:

Case - small (INTAKE AIR FILTERS)
Cooler - small quiet
CPU - 2600k?
Motherboard - Mini ATX? maximus gene?
GPU - 7970 gigabyte windforce 3 at 1200mhz (clock) and 1650 mhz (mem)
Psu - What would fit with the case? 500-650w? Don't mind paying extra for quality here (MODULAR PLEASE)
Fans - ??? QUIET

Okay. Say $1000 but I'd either like to wait for ivy if it'd make a difference in terms of noise/performance. I don't mind paying more if necessary. Try to keep it lightweight and easy to lug around but easy enough to build in!.

I already own the GPU.

Everything else needs to be bought from amazon.com (USA) no other place because pc parts here are expensive as fudgecake and amazon ship to po boxes and I trust them warranty-wise etc.

LGA 1155.

The only way I'll change this is if there's a small enough case with ATX and I'll put my sabertooth x79 board in there and buy a 3820. But then the budget'll be $600 since I'd need to buy a new board.

If I do the above I will have a free h100 cooler biggrin.gif but gl getting a small case to fit it. the fans are quiet though, pwm fans at 1000rpm.

EDIT:

Basically help me out:

I want a small portable powerful rig. Have a gigabyte 7970 lying around, I'm purchasing two 7970 lightenings in April (birthday $$$ + salary) and this'll be in my HAF X 50kg rig rolleyes.gif.

If I go with x79 and 3820 it'll be better for me overall because I can get a rampage 4 extreme with better pcie spacing for multi-gpu and more features and more BUILD TIEM.

I would get this, you would have to take out the removable drive cage so it could fit your video card, then you might be able to get the h 100 in the front of it. Should be light and easy to carry but should fit most hardware. And for the next few days it is 15% off. thumb.gif

Any chance of a windowed/ventilated case?

I'd like to have the side panel be useful in some ways.

How would I lug around a tower case?

I was thinking a case with a handle if tower style? Or a cube/cuboid/lunchbox style case?

Thanks though, gonna look at some more lian li cases they look SWEET for mass-produced stuff.

There's always the Silverstone SG07 you can snag for around $200. Comes with it's own 600w PSU that's plenty powerful for any setup you can fit in this thing. Supposedly you can run something like a 5970 with an overclocked i7 980X and still have power to spare. biggrin.gif

It's a good PSU. Case has like 12" of clearance for a GPU too. biggrin.gif

EDIT:

There's also another variant of that case too without the flashy plastic on the sides and costs around $25 cheaper too, same specs otherwise: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163169

SG07 and wait until these monstrous Z77 mini ITX boards start rolling out. pair it with a 3570k or a 3770k.
or you can get this case
225
LINK
It has a handle but you need to buy a PSU. and keep in mind with the LIAN LI you have to get a low profile HSF (like a Thermalright AXP 140) because the PSU is above the CPU.

Picture of heatsink bellow.
401

Good luck thumb.gif

Hold off and wait for Ivy. For a few reasons... power consumption as you already mentioned, That new ITX Z77 board from Asus is perfect for your build. It will give you the OCing that you are after and it has Virtu MVP. If you don't know what MVP is, read this thread and watch the video, its perfect for a SFF build. http://www.overclock.net/t/1226926/vortez-cebit-2012-gigabyte-live-demo-lucid-virtu-mvp Don't buy 2 7970's. Buy one so you'll have 2 for your other rig and then buy a less expensive GPU like a 7850 or 7870 for the SFF. The MVP will boost your graphics performnace substantially making the 78xx GPU perform like a much more powerful card. You'll save a decent amount of money and you won't lose a thing in terms of performance.

Thanks guys, I'd go with MATX though, more features. I'm thinking thermaltake A30?

Shuttle has an x79 pc kit with no cpu/hdd/gpu but a PSU is included.

Also I WILL BE GETTING NEW 7970's. The reason is because mine are OCd a lot atm and I get coil whine and I get noisy fans. I will clock it nearer to stock clocks for this build to have no coil whine and almost silent on load. Also if I plan to Crossfire with double the coil whine and 2x + more for less space the fan rpms ill kill myself.

Edit: are there any small atx cases? I only want 2 pcie slots so even a case with 4 wont matter smile.gif.
