Nice. Thanks for posting that--it's what I suspected, but didn't know if any one of the parties involved had looked into it.

Shameful...unexpected, but shameful.

DT is not a very biased news source.... they generally provide in depth analysis beyond the headlines.

If you read the article, you will see that Apple is attempting to do a few things:
1) Offer a royalty-free patent in exchange for acceptance of their proposed standard. However, this "patent" of the same SIM with less plastic is worthless by all accounts.
2) If accepted, require all licenses to give some of their patents in return.
3) Their standard violates SIM design guidelines since it can get stuck in existing slots
4) Use their cash war chest to create subsidiaries to take control of the voting board.

These are all not cool.
Once again...

They can't do that... if they say it's free it has to be free... that aside... I doubt they'll win -- it's really just shaving the plastic off a normal micro-sim, rather than an actual smaller design which is preferable.

Just because they are not looking for monetary reimbursement for having inventing trimming plastic. The caveats they attach to the product, means they are not giving this away for free. There most definitely is a price attached.
I'm just saying they can't turn around and then say, hey, this'll cost you money. I commented on nothing else, I don't really agree with what they're doing.

If its free it has to be free. Well, if you think the IP Apple would be forcing other companies to give to Apple has zero value, you would be correct. Sorry, cross license so others can have Sim cards with cut plastic is a joke. There is zero way to defend Apple here. It won't cost us more, but its a carefully planned business move to devalue competitors IP. If it were the other way around, Apple would be going ballistic right now.

Apple gives to others: Cut plastic Sim cards...
Apple wants from others: Access to expensive and quality patents for free.

Seems like a fair trade to me.

See above. IP has a monetary value. Who'd a thunk it?

I guess, your not saying that... But you obviously come across as basically saying "its a simple cross license deal" when in fact its Apple trying to steal IP from other companies without having to pay a royalty, and them trying to take the spotlight by bringing us a "revolutionary new sim" which is just cut doen plastic...

I wasn't saying anything about cross licensing. I'm not sure what patents Apple is wanting from these other companies, but I'm not really wanting Apple's "sim" to go through, as the others are smaller. That aside... Apple's probably just putting through a sim (that won't get accepted, i.e, it doesn't fulfill the requirements for a new sim) and saying it's royalty free and hoping that the board will want the competitors to do the same, at least that's what I've read, and I'm thinking it's probably right.
