Is this supposed to happen on an i5-2500k OC'd?

This is my first intel build and I just started overclocking my 2500k. I was testing 4.2 ghz with 42x multiplier at 100 mhz, core voltage i set it to was 1.32. Anyways, I ran prime95 and i see the overclocked speed 4200 mhz in cpu-z..but when i stop the workers on prime95, the core speed drops down to 1.6 ghz with 16x multiplier at 100 mhz. Is this normal? Or do I have something enabled on my motherboard that could be doing this? Sorry if this is a stupid question..this is my first intel build. Thanks! smile.gif

You have Intel Speedstep enabled.

go into the bios is disable it along with the C1e power states.

although its pretty useful. just lowers clock speeds and voltage when the power isnt needed

that's normal bro, it's called speed step, a power saving feature. if you don't want it you can turn it off from the bios

Yeah thats EIST (Enhaned Intel Speed Step) leave it enabled it reduces heat and power during idle. Its very inteligent and you will net 0 loss in performance.
