[ars] Blizzard struggles to hold the MMO throne with Mists of Pandaria beta - Page 2

# of subs? Not a single game comes close.

Profit? A lot of asian MMOs beat WoW decisively with a micro transaction business model.

WoW's demise? Hardly.

On a side note, I'm really interested to see how GW2 turns out.

All these suppositions annoy me to no end, as people are just blatantly *wrong*. Yes, they're taking a different direction with this xpac's theme (new area, bigger horde/alliance conflict than ever, instead of a new end boss such as illidan, arthas and deathwing.)
People simply are encountering fatigue after going on 8 years of WOW, and hunger for something different. The fact they bash the game they loved as they quit is unfortunate, but that's gamers for you...

Thank you, at least I know someone who agrees with me thumb.gif

WoW is one of few paid sub games left really. I just even got an email saying Vangaurd went free to play. Hell, Aion went free to play in europe and is going to do the same in the US...I thought NCsoft would rather see Aion flat out die than make it free to play, but that's just what the business model is all going to.

One thing I can say is, Blizzard needs to do something about the whole having to buy all the expansions to play the game. My buddy tried getting me to play it for the longest and I wouldn't do it because I didn't want to spend 150+ dollars just to play WoW (with him being he was on cata expansion) so he actually ended up buying them for me just so I would play with him. Sure, they have a deal for like 2 days a year where they give a decent deal on expansions, but unless you're in the loop, you'll never really hear about it.

It's not like Blizzard doesn't have the money, they're just greedy. They could easily just sell the last expansion for 60 bucks and give full access to all other expansions because they've already made their money on those....lots of it. You'd think they'd just want to get more people in the game but there's this 200 dollar barrier because you can't even experience end game content...and with moderate to heavy playing, that could be as little as 1-2 weeks, especially with dungeon finder. My buddy didn't buy them all at once we just figured we'd spread it out as I lvl'd but at the end of like 2 weeks, I was already level 85.

I get it, they're a company that's here to make money. But at the same time, I believe they're losing money in the long run because people who would've otherwise played the game, haven't because they see they need to buy not one game...but 4 (5 with MoP), when they could sell just the latest expansion + bring in monthly sub and have even more numbers.

WoW's an okay game, but just because it has high numbers doesn't mean "It's the best", it just means they've spent alot on advertising it. As long as they keep that up, they'll always have lots of random people who can't play their toons filling up their servers going "TAKE MY MONEY". *Rides off into the sunset on cash shop mount*

They'd only need to lose 80% of their player base to probably STLL be the MMO champion for subs.
Rift was a joke, TOR is slowly falling every day, and a tiny group ala Ron Paul is proclaiming GW2 as the greatest thing ever.
We'll see what happens.

QFT

After playing GW2 this weekend I think WoW is pretty safe unless they totally screw up the MoP talent revamp. The people riding that GW2 hype train is laughable.

If I had to choose between WoW and SWTOR, I would've chosen the latter. It's superb to WoW and offers more fun while playing (in WoW you torture enemies by tickling them, in SWTOR you electrocute them), but in the end game it's just another WoW copy, therefore I ditched both.

MoP looks like crap tbh. More of the same. I will jump on Diablo 3 bandwagon. I might jump on Guild Wars 2 bandwagon too, if I like it once I try open beta. Most definitely trying out The Secret World as it really looks promising and Funcom doesn't disappoint when it comes to new stuff. Hopefully they learned from their Age of Conan mistakes.

What the hell? The title of the article makes no sense whatsoever. And then the article itself goes on to shower MoP with praises.
