SPDIF -> DAC -> Receiver Help please

Hi all,

So today I changed my setup and I am having trouble getting it to work

Just got a SimAudio Moon 100d and trying to run my PC's mobo optical (BIOSTAR TA990FXE) to the DAC optical input, then through analog outs to my amp which powers my bookshelf speakers.

Before I got the DAC I had an RCA to Mini that was in the back jack of my pc, it worked fine, but I wanted better sound from the comp. I have gone to control panel -> sound and selected SPDIF, it registers like there should be sound, but I hear nothing. The dac seems like it is getting something b/c the 192 input lights up when I select the SPDIF on the comp.

I feel like the problem is coming from the computer, any suggestions as to what I am missing?

Thanks

It could be that your motherboard is trying to output a codec that your DAC doesn't support.

What OS are you running?

I am running WIn 7 64x

Brief update, I found a digital coax cord and tried it out, it worked with the DAC, but no optical still.

Due to my setup, I would like to run Coax from my transport and optical from the pc, so I'd still like to figure it out :/

If you go all the way into the device's configuration box (under the sounds panel) you should be able to see a bunch of checkboxes related to what the "receiver" can handle. Once you find those, you should be able to test each one individually, which will allow you to tell Windows what streams it can and can't decode.

If I were at home, I'd post a screenshot, but since I'm at work, I'm going off of memory.

Let me know if you're able to find that, or if you run into any other issues.

Chunky,

Yeah I have found that check box option, as well as the last tab on that page, specifying what bit rate it goes at 16/96, 24/96 etc.

On the Coax I have fooled around with it, and it seems that DAC takes just about anything that I apply, further confusing me with the optical situation, I have fooled around a bit with it, but don't know enough as to what the optical likes and whatnot

Here is the link to the DAC if you wanted to see specifics on what it accepts

Is the board a Realtek board? Just curious if there might be a setting in the audio panel that we might be missing here.

I know it's unrelated, but on my D2X driver, I have a way of enabling and disabling the digital output. Using that ignores certain system settings. Might work the same?

The board is a Realtek board. However, I removed the Realtek drivers last fall because they made my system super bass-heavy. After the removal, I had optical set up with my old receiver (NAD L70) and it was working fine. My situation now is why I am puzzled, the DAC should take in the optical but it's not or the comp isn't outputting right.

Is there a signal direction to optical (similar to coax) where I have it mixed up?

Should I DL the realtek drivers again and try it out?

I was looking for some kind of on/off option of digital output, but all I see in my CP -> Sound is :

Realtek HDMI Output
Speakers (RCA -> Mini, back panel headphone output I was using for sound comparison once the coax worked)
Headphones (Front Jack)
Digital Audio (S/PDIF) - Should be the optical option, displays an output when optic is plugged in, but no sound
Digital Audio (S/PDIF) - Currently active with coax cable hooked up

Coax is going PC -> Moon 100D -> Rega Mira 3 Integraded (via interconnects, analog), Focal Speakers.

It seems like it should be some kind of digital switch where it will all be fixed, I'm trying to give you as much detail as I can

Thanks again for your help so far smile.gif

Update:

I plugged the Optical in at the same time as Coax, and some how it started working under that last Digital Audio setting, not sure how, but it works now and I'm pretty happy about it.

Thanks for your help smile.gif
