Can crashing harm components?

I've been wondering this for a while now.

Many times I would like to leave some heavy graphical program on a loop running while I'm sleeping just to test my GPU overclock but I'm quite afraid to do so since it feels bad if it crashes right away and my baby has to suffer all night long frown.gif On the other hand I think it shouldn't do anything unless I'm running gigantic amount of voltage. What do you think? smile.gif

Well... maybe not the crashing... but if it's crashing because you're giving it too much juice or... it's overheating... or just OCing should decrease the lifespan... Maybe not a simply OC, but if the OC results in higher than normal temps (even if they are safe), technically is reducing the lifespan of the CPU. However, running a large graphic intensive program that'll tell you whether or not the OC is stable might be worth it because you might not test your OC and a month later it might just crash,etc because it was unstable, and for that entire month you've been stressing that component more than it can handle. Either way, OCing is a risky business, you do it at your own risk

Depends why it crashed really. I know when you BSOD it'll say "windows has shutdown to prevent any damage to the computer" but I really can't figure out how software would physically harm a component. Unless it was voltage/clock related. In short no, if you leave a stress test on overnight and it blue screens and restarts, your OC was simply just unstable.

I've never seen hardware damaged by software crashing in 16 years of PC building/overclocking.

Cheap PSUs can kill hardware when they die. Ignoring heat problems can kill hardware as well.

I'm not talking about CPU overclocking. I'm actually overclocking my new G74SX laptops 560M GPU. I haven't touched the voltage (don't know if I even could) and I've just upped the core and memory clocks. I'm not by any means new to overclocking, been overclocking since Socket A and Radeon 9XXX thumb.gif

The GPU doesn't get much hotter after the OC (775 > 900 core, 1250 > 1550 memory) so heat really isn't a problem, under 70c at all times.

Can't see that doing any harm apart from doing some corruption to HDD. I've been messing with computer for 14 years and just once I have managed to corrupt an OS (Suse linux) by shutting it down improperly.

I think I'll just leave Heaven on loop for the night and see if it's still running when I wake up smile.gif

What I hate at OCing GPUs is that I might have an OC that is able to run some benchmark all night (3DMark or Furmark, doesn't matter) and then I launch some old game and it crashes in five minutes. With CPU it's easy, just run Prime95 blend overnight...
