Lens recommendations

Thread Starter
Looking for some wisdom on a new lens. I have a d5100 with just the kit lens. I enjoy photographing mostly landscapes and architecture. This June I will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and also be doing a safari. I realize the safari and mt. climb would fall under two different kinds of photography. I'm mainly interested in a lens recommendation that would be best for capturing the landscape of the mt. climb. I'm looking to spend no more than $300.

Thoughts?

On your budget, grab the 55-200 VR and 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/1.8and you should be all set.. If you want both in your budget, you'll need to get one or both of them used. Check Adorama and B&H for used prices.

A safari lens will be tough with a 300 dollar budget. If I was in your shoes I would use all 300 and pick up the longest used telephoto you can afford.

And for the climb, the kit lens is fine. You donot need anything specialize for it.

Ps. Get extra batteries and lens wipes....

Thanks for the replies. I've been finding some great deals on used telephotos on another photography forum. I planned on buying a couple extra batteries. I don't trust plugging my stuff into some hinkey African hotel outlet.

Tamron or Sigma are good brand and they are not bad. They are usually cheaper than Nikon ones.
