crossfire problems

Thread Starter
whats up guys,

i got my second 6950 today, installed it, downloaded the crossfire drivers, put the crossfire bridge on, enabled crossfire, jumped into a game and alot of not good things happened...

BF3 wouldnt start, crysis had a bunch of artifacts and sound didnt work, CODMW3 wouldnt go above or below 43fps, and when i was watching a youtube video i got a BSOD...

only thing that i see is that the driver numbers are different, also the driver switches are set to the #2 spot on each card.

ive never had 2 graphics cards and whats more i dont know ANYTHING about software, i dont even know where to begin. heres screenshots of things i think someone who knows what they are talking about might need:

Hi Sean W. The newly added graphics card may be causing you problems here. Quickly test each of the graphics cards individually in your PC as this should allow you to see if one or both of them have issues alone.

I just recently upgraded to 2 6950's and found some games play nice with crossfire, and others do not requiring changes to OC settings/in game video settings

Tips:

Always confirm you have enough power: run a gpu stress program like kombustor and cpu/mem stress program like prime 95 at the same time. Under full load check the 12v rail voltage. This is not a real life scenario, well except for serious rendering or folding, but will give you a good test of stability/max temps

Install each card on their own and test there OC/voltage settings are stable, once sweet spot is found put em both in

Install latest drivers blah blah blah important step but obvious, maybe even roll back 12.2 and see if that helps

Install latest CAP release, activate for specific game played

I find i always have to have vsync on to match monitor refresh rate

During games drop settings on shadows an other intensive settings one a time to see if game smooths out

If using MSI afterburner make sure its beta 15 release, I tend to synchronize settings for similar graphics processors, helps for overall stability

thats what ive done...good luck

alright... so

i took one of the cards out, and tested each card individually. and i see that the bios numbers are different

one of the cards bios number is:

013.008.000.010.039450(113-C2160100-107) and the other is
013.008.000.009.039285(113-C2160100-106)

the bios number should be the same, yes?

My first answer is I don't know

My second answer is this

If you have identical cards (manufacturer/manufacturing date) they should have identical BIOS version. Manufacturing date is usually on a label on the PCB. If the higher number BIOS is on the newer card then there may not be an issue. I have seen the MSI R6950 TF3's have different numbered BIOS...why I assume because the engineering team makes improvements over time.

Example: http://www.overclock.net/t/1229415/shipping-card-for-rma-via-usps/10#post_16722586

How did the individual cards perform? and did you place them both in the same x16 slot?

Well i am thinking of it to is your crossfire bridge good, do you have a few to try

Here is link the techpowerups database who make GPUz find your card/BIOS: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&architecture=&manufacturer=&model=&interface=&memSize=0

If this what you want to do to try and help your CF issues then there is ways i have used

two things a bad flash can brick the card which is usually reversible, and I am not sure the BIOS is the issue
but if you are confident in your skills I would try it you can always flash back, but if you are not you should ask around for more help in here:
http://www.overclock.net/ati/892583-amd-69xx-owners-club.html

I have always used this guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/1070678/unlock-and-oc-that-6950-tf3-twin-frozr-iii-the-definitive-guideo

Use this guide, only you already have the good BIOS file, no need to download the one in the thread as it is a modified one only for 2gb TF3's

you will do :

1. use gpuz to make a backup of existing bios file in case new one does not work correctly
2. make a bootable flash drive
3. put your bios file on it
4. boot from the flash drive
5. enter the Atiflash -p -f 0 then enter the name of your bios file

this is the instructions in the thread I directed you to, I just highlighted areas that will be different for you
************************************
1.Make a bootable pendrive(link)
Use whatever works for you -- I recommend making the pen drive bootable by running NTFSfloppysetup and then tinkering with any filesystem files as per your preferences/ needs Just insert a ~ 2GB pen drive and you know that it WILL work. Some PD's hate booting into dos . Well.

2. Extract the Modded BIOS flash files to the pen drive(link)
Copy BIOS file to root..

3. Reboot and FLASH!
The TF3 has two different BIOS's , one with an aggressive fan profile, and one with a passive fan profile. These can be accessed from the fan speed toggle switch.
So a bad flash should not be a problem , but its your card and if you're weary , I assume you know better.

Reboot and boot from the PD . type :
Atiflash –p –f 0 R6950PEX.bin put the name of your BIOS file here

alright, so i looked at each card idividually, and i noticed one of them had 1536 shaders, that means its unlocked to a 6970, put the other card in, it only had 1408 shaders, so a 6970 and a 6950 were trying to talk to each other... so i flashed the other card to a 6970... and now im going to run some games and benches, see where we are at...

EDIT:

i just ran Battle field, i was using the tank mission as my benchmark, before i was getting these FPS at certian points:

Intro to the level when you are looking at the dinasor: 53fps
after flashing the other card: 105fps

when you first take controll of the tank: 55fps
after flash: 120fps

first explosion that explodes infront of tank lowest fps: 38
after flash: 78fps

and first tank battle, point blank shot explosion enemy tank: 23fps
after flashing: 49

i think i did something right smile.gif

Crysis still has a bunch of problems, all kind of artifacts, and COD series wont go over 48fps

EDIT:

ugh, now BF3 wont start again!

Try reinstalling Windows and do a fresh install of everything, including drivers? Who made your 6950's, and did you buy both new?
