Samsung RAM question.

Thread Starter
I've got a Samsung NP305V5A-A05US with a AMD A6-3410mx processor.

My computer friend who works at a shop in San Jose tells me if I buy 1600mhz ram I will only get 1333mhz. And If I go for 1333Mhz, I will only get 1066mhz. Basically, he says laptops automatically step down the clock of the RAM.

I've looked through my BIO's to find nothing to kick up the clock in the event it automatically steps it down.

However, I think I remember seeing my RAM saying 1333mhz and CPU-Z telling me 666mhz (DDR3). So it looks like it's not stepping the RAM down.

I ask this because I want to make sure if I buy some Corsair Vengence Laptop RAM, I will get better performance. I have one 4gb stick (3.48gb usable), so I assume at least doubling the number of sticks will get me some major performance changes, and I use 2gb normally, but I'd like some head room for the GFX card and other programs.

Here's the ram I was looking to buy. Some reviews say it clocks down to 1333mhz though.

Thanks in advance!

Your friend is mistaken. Any RAM 1333 mhz or faster will run at 1333 mhz, anything slower will run at its rated speed.

So I should just get the lowest latency 1333mhz dual stick right?

Thanks!

Generally the latency will be the same for all laptop RAM of the same speed, anything else is considered overclocked. It will default to standard timings anyway, so buy whatever is cheap.

the sticks you linked too will be just fine. However I doubt you will see a significant change going from 1 stick to 2. Dual channel may help with the gfx since it is using shared memory.

Yep, but that's only because your laptop (or should I say, that CPU) can only support up to 1333 MHz RAM. If you do get the 1600MHz RAM though, if it downclocks to 1333 MHz, you'll see a corresponding decrease in timing. My 1333 MHz RAM (9-9-9-24) on my Vaio Z1 clocks in at 1066MHz 7-7-7-20 since Arrandale can only take 1066 MHz RAM.
