To keep or not to keep my 2600k? Help needed.

I'm about to undertake a rather large time consuming task - converting my 170 (and growing) Bluray movie disc collection to MKV on my 2TB NAS drive for streaming around the house. I have two pieces of software for the job. One is CPU only and the other utilises Quicksync and CUDA as well as CPU for encoding. My current setup has been doing well for the last 6 months, as this machine was built for nothing but video encoding in the first place.

But having spent quite alot of late nights reading these forums, and being someone with a major problem with buying new technology when I don't really need too i'm looking at some new upgrade options for my new task. So far i've come up with the following scenarios -

1. Keep my current system as is, and use my spare cash to by a new SSD.

2. Sell my 2600k, and go with an Ivy Bridge 3770k or similar hoping that it gets me some small improvements for minimal cash layout.

3. Sell the 2600k, M/B and RAM and go with an I7-3820, M/B, 16gb ram and a Geforce for CUDA (550Ti maybe)

4. Same as above but go with a 3930k instead.


Option 4 is my prefered, but will come at a major cost even after selling my current stuff. I figure the loss of QuickSync will be made up by CUDA and the extra 2 cores/4 threads. Seeing some early sample benches of Ivy Bridge doesn't have me that excited tbh, and the 3820 seems to be very close to a 2600k on most things. Not sure if quad channel ram will give me the advantages i'm looking for.

I'd say if you are someone with a major problem with buying new technology when I don't really need too, then give the task a go with your current set-up, option 1.

If you don't already own an SSD, then get one today, at least for your OS.

If I were in your position I'd want a 240GB SSD.

3930K is bad-ass for endoding but I woulnd't make that move from a 2600K unless you do alot of it and the money doesn't bother you. Also, if you plan to OC, the SB-E hexa-cores throw ALOT of heat which you'll need to manage.

Would an SSD make any difference to video encoding times?

I would love a 3930k, but i'm finding it hard to justify the extra costs at the moment, unless it cuts my encoding times down by 30-50% that is.
