corsair H80 or antec 920? - Page 3

Both the Corsair Hydro Series H80 and the Antec Kuhler 920 are designed and manufactured by the OEM Asetek Inc. The only thing that Corsair or Antec do when it comes to handling the coolers is silk-screening a brand name onto the pump and packaging the pump and radiator unit with a fan or other parts. Personally I would go with the Corsair Hydro Series H80. First off the mounting hardware is much easier to install and just looks better. The Corsair Pump also just looks cool, I'm not sure if you plan to have a case window, but the Corsair pump block looks great. When it comes to pump design and operation the Corsair model although still made by Asetek is much more reliable and quiet, there's just something done more right with the Corsair Hydro H80. There are countless forum entries on this bizzare clicking noise that comes from Antec Kuhler 620 and 920 pumps, in terms of using a pump for a quieter PC this ruins that completely.
The H80 is far superior, although it has rigid tubing to the radiator, in my book the H80 is the cooler to go with.
Hope this helps.

As you said they are the same radiator. The clicking sound you are referring to happens for the first 24 hours of the coolers use. I have no idea why. Mine did it and I freaked out like everyone else but after 24 hours it stopped. Mounting was easy I'm not sure how much easier it could have been but whatever.

Like I said the performance is near identical between the two. Your best bet is to get whatever is cheaper. If you like the look of the Corsair I guess go for it but I prefer the non-rigid tubing and the fact I can change things from windows.

I never said CLCs are horrible. Don't misrepresent my comments. I said that in the three prime criteria used by most people (and hardware reviewers), to purchase a CPU cooler, that CLC's are inferior to highend HSFs - and objective testing proves this is true. I realize some people can't deal with this reality because they automatically believe water-cooling must be better than air, but this is not the case with CLCs.
CLCs are thermally inefficient, expensive and noisy compared to highend HSFs - that is reality. Arguing isn't going to change this.
If you like CLCs and are willing to accept their deficiencies including the water-leak liability, then go right ahead and buy them. CLCs are simply not the best CPU cooling choice for most PC users. If they make you happy, then that is what you should use.
Hating the facts or the messenger isn't going to change reality. wink.gif

Did you even look at that review you quoted? The Silver arrow gets 49.9, the H100 with fans on medium matches it and the H100 beats it with fans on high. The H80 gets 54.5 with fans on medium and low while getting 51.9 on high. A difference of 5 degrees at most is not what I would call thermally insufficient, especially considering their running a 4.8ghz over-clock.

So where is the deficiency here? They are performing right within the range of a silver arrow which is actually very good.

You're right you didn't say they are horrible, you said people can buy what makes them happy. But then every single one of your posts tries to misrepresent how horrible they are by saying their prone to leaks and that their "thermally insufficient."

That Coolit Eco I sold to my buddy is now cooling his 2600k in his micro atx rig and he carries it around all the time, he even carries it around on the bus. It fit's way better than any tower HSF in his small case.

Also when you say people have been opening these things to find them leaking out of the box, seriously post some sort of a link because that kind of thing is certainly NOT a common problem. In the end, I am very happy with my H80 and I am not worried in the slightness about it leaking on me because of the build quality (that is obvious when you open the box). If it does, both instances on this forum where corsair CLC's have leaked corsair replaced all the damaged parts.

^^^ Denial doesn't change reality.

The test results speak for themselves. You can argue until you are blue in the face and the FACTS are NOT going to change.

As I have posted numerous times : Buy What Makes You Happy.

Based on actual test results Closed Loop Coolers are a poor choice for most PC users compared to highend HSFs.. If they make you happy then that is what you should buy - but don't try to mislead people by making disingenuous claims for CLCs.

But if you spent your time lapping the h100 block so its flat and putting 4 high speed yate loon on it the cooler it works pretty well. My friend just got one for his i7 930, To bad both his cpu and h100 were not flat at all. The cpu wasn't to bad, little concave. But the H100 was lopsided and slightly concave. So I lapped them both and applied AS5. After I did just those mods load temp dropped 10c, after adding the loons load temps dropped another 2c. Overall 12C drop on load is pretty good.

Look for 1 lapped working

I might try doing that to my H80.

How silent are those loons? I bought a pair of Gelid Silent PWM fans but I wish I could find myself a pair of AP-15's somewhere.

can barely hear them at 50%, loud at 100% though.
