Getting a Q9650 stable under Prime95...

Thread Starter
I'm running my Q9650 at 4ghz (445x9) with core voltage of 1.3 (1.4 in bios). I've played games for hours without any problems, but I get errors quickly when running Prime95. I even upped the voltage to 1.41 (1.45v in bios), but I still get Prime95 errors within minutes. Should I attempt a higher voltage or do you think it's my RAM? RAM timings are 5-5-5-15 and running at 2.1V. Any recommendations?

Thanks

you also need to mess around with the north bridge voltage.

VCore isn't helping because it's most likely NB/RAM fail. What are the details of your RAM?

#1: If you're running DDR2 800 you'll be RAM failing most likely at over FSB 420-ish
#2: If you're trying to run 4 sticks you'll have issues tuning for high OC and you'll certainly need to raise NB voltage
#3: What is your NB voltage currently?
#4: Are you running Prime Blend or small FFT?

It's Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5C 4GB XMS2 PC2-6400 800Mhz ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184 ).

1. Alright, I'll try some 1066. Can you recommend a good 4gb kit? 2x2gb
2. Just 2 sticks.
3. Not sure. At work but I'll check once I get home. Can it be checked in Windows?
4. Prime Blend. (EDIT: I also tried small FFT and a couple cores have failed after 2 minutes.)

Thank you!

EDIT: I just ordered G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPI-B ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231246 ) <-- FIXED LINK!
Still curious about that north bridge voltage. I don't recall even seeing that option.

Ah ok, gotcha. It's the highest (1.5), but I've tried it at 1.4 too. Which is preferable?

i believe the safest is 1.5V. but be careful though. messing with that will put more heat on your cpu and chipset.

the best way is finding the lowest voltage for your NB.

VTT should be kept under 1.4V at the risk of killing your chip!!!.

Really on 775 VTT changes are for high-FSB overclocks. I needed 1.36VTT for the 4.3GHz/506FSB my Q9550 runs. Turn that VTT down ASAP.

You're cranking dangerous voltages when the problem is your RAM. Wait until you get proper 1066 before you start messing with anything.

Also know that certain kits don't want to run 1066 on 775 intel boards. Your link was dead but the popular baby-blue G-Skill 1066 kits is one of the sets that may only be stable to 900-ish.
