Last i read up on this, some were saying that the reactor was completely out of control, and that it was expected to melt down through the ground into the Ground water which would cause Hydo-Volcanic explosion which would rain Radiation and poison all of Japan.

Is this no longer the issue?

I'm not against nuclear power, but I wish people would stop claiming it's the alternate energy source that is going to save us. Nuclear has (very) heavy risks and costs associated with it. Just because major issues are rare, doesn't mean they don't happen.

This ^ pretty much sums up what I was about to say...

People have to stop and consider the danger is much greater than "how many people have lost their lives at other plants or mining"....

There are multiple instances where Nuclear Plants have gone bad, indeed entire towns that need to be cleaned up from nuclear plants, they have yet to be cleaned up many (20-30) years later....

The disposal of old plants & waste is just as great a problem as the dangers of a nuclear melt down...

Nevertheless, I won't be convinced this is where we need to keep throwing money at, to me it will never be the best solution, ever..

Fixed...

Don't know if it is still an issue, I suppose we will all know when we are glowing at night and the people posting in this thread are still chanting, "But Nuclear power isn't as bad as other things.."

If you're going to be stubborn and close-minded about it then there is no point in you discussing it on this forum.

If it's not the best solution, then please name a better one, and back it up with some good reasoning so we can discuss it.

Behind every hydro-electric dam is a lake where a river used to be, that's just how they work. To have enough back-pressure to generate significant power, there has to be a body of water behind them.
Those projects to restore the habitat often end up with those dams being demo'd.
What's wrong with having a lake where a river used to be? It CHANGES the ecosystem, sure, but does it really damage it?

The only issue I've really heard about with dams is that fish can't get upriver far enough to breed. But they've solved that problem already with fish ladders.

Hah, I remember that too. I also remember getting into a big argument about something to do with how concrete holds and distributes heat.

Didn't it end up being that those claims were purely speculative, and not based on any facts or evidence from the plant? Basically, it is what would have happened in a simulated case, but not necessarily what DID happen thus far?

Well you put an unstable energy producer on an unstable chunk of rock. Ya don't say?

Agreed.

It's extremely ignorant to throw nuclear out the window because of a few incidents - especially when you have shown absolutely no grasp of the flaws and corrections made on different reactor designs.

The only issue I've really heard about with dams is that fish can't get upriver far enough to breed.

Fish getting up river isn't so much the problem but in small estuaries that are dammed there are usually lots of wetlands that are submerged.
Oxygen concentrations also drop behind dams which affects wild life.
Sediment transport is also changed.
At least on the Columbia there aren't huge reservoirs except Lake Roosevelt and Lake Okanogan.
If the designers of the dam are careful much of the impact to the environment can be minimized but in most cases dams were slapped wherever was convenient so in a lot of cases the original landscape has been changed.
