The problem there is that earthquakes cause tsunamis. So why is your plan not ready for one, then immediately following, the other? This was a design failure.

This article is a waste of time to read. Of course there is high radiation INSIDE of a nuclear reactor. Nuclear power is extremely safe especially the new designs. Its our own governments fault for not letting up make new plants with all the latest technologies that we have learned from all of these accidents. All I'm saying is we have been doing it since 1955 in the navy with no problems. But we are really good at what we do biggrin.gif

Agreed.
Same idea should be applied to nuclear but people just haven't figured out how to do this yet.

When ever nuclear power is been discussed there is all ways people how are opposed to it. "We should not build more nuclear plants there are not safe" "We should invest in alternative energy" that sorta thing. The thing is that pretty much every new plant that is built is safer then the previous generation. New nuclear plants are very safe and thous under construction are even safer. The issue is the old reactors. The Fukushima plant was built in 1967. It was due to be decommissioned but an decision was made to extend the life of the plant. The plant was supposed to get an upgrade to its safety systems but the where never implemented so when the tsunami hit the plant was not up to code.

I'm a big supporter of nuclear power but old reactors scare the living crap out of me. IMO any reactor built in the 60's is pretty much a ticking time bomb and plants built in the 70's should be decommissioned before this decade is over. The thing that scares me the most is the old Russian plants. The old Leningrad reactors are only 200km for the Finnish border and 500km from where I live.

"Sensational. What do you think of the findings of chocolate at Hersey's chocolate factory? Call in on this number 555-34067-32 and let us know your thoughts. I have na e-mail here from "benstillerizwinrar@verizon.com and he says "I'm disgusted at the notion that Hersey's could produced chocolate from their factory and it must have been Obama's fault" Shocking words there. Again, write in and let us know your thoughts. Back to Tom at Hersey's for an update."

"Thanks Jim. My god, I just spat some of the chocolate out and it appears to be a brown sludgy substance. The camera man said my tongue is all brown and it looks like someone crapped in my mouth."

The U.S. Navy has an exemplary record, of which they should be proud. The Soviet navy, however, did not. Among the potential unforseen circumstances casing nuclear problems could be a drop in funding, increase in poor training, etc, in the U.S. Navy. Will that happen? Almost certainly not.

Modern reactors are so safe it's silly. So, so many more people die mining coal and refining oil.
In fact, my father worked at ARCO after he graduated. He has stories that are so grotesque and beyond imagination I can't believe he can sleep at night.
He understandably thinks that right now, nuclear power is the only sustainable, reasonable, and clean option available. I can't help but agree.

Best answer ever.

Nuclear power is not the problem. Problem is companies like TEPCO trying to cut costs. If those diesel generators have had a physical protection (something like a wall), NOTHING would have happened.
Nuclear power is safe. Human avarice is not.

It is cheap and apparently safe, just not for the area around the reactor, I wouldn't worry because of the fact that as long as you don't dot the landscape with these things we should be fine for the most part. rolleyes.gif

Nuclear power is fine. Technology has moved on so much from chernobyl times. The reactors that blew in Japan were over 30 years old and were past commission. proof.gif

Counties like Britain that get a grand total of 0 natural disasters a year should invest more into nuclear which we are. Currently 25% of our power is made from Nuclear reactors and I live less than 50 miles from one.

Countries like Japan which get a lot of earthquakes and for example America which get a lot of hurricanes shouldn't have nuclear reactors. It's common sense really.
