How about you quit thinking like EVERYBODY is as blessed with internet as you are. rolleyes.gif

what he said. Most of us in rural USA cant get much for internet.

As we’ve seen with Ubisoft, you can have the most stable connection in the world and still be at the whim to server switches and meltdowns at the developer/publisher end.

Good for you, you're not everyone else, not everyone else has internet at all times, or at all, period. You're giving a big middle finger to those people, and then calling us idiots for supporting those people. You need to relax.

Ive been in long multi day road trips, its near impossible to do any more then just watch movies. Playing games is out of question there. You might say when you're on a plane, to which I ask if you're going to bring your desktop with you?
Come on guys, its 2012. If one doesn't have even a basic DSL connection that's always on, you probably live out in the middle of no where and can at least get satellite connection going. While it would be stupid of them not to include an offline mode, it's not like the online mode is the end of the world. Assuming it's stable, it really shouldn't be an issue.

I'm actually fairly often without Internet, usually at Uni on my laptop. I tend to play a lot of stuff like Simcity and Minecraft between classes. And what if my router dies? I can't use games I purchased for a day or two, or longer...Always needing internet means I'm limited to playing in the library or one building...There's another building with WiFi but unless you're in certain classrooms (You can't always get in them) then it can be patchy.

And, if you'd actually read the story..If EA takes down their servers and there isn't an offline patch, bam goes your game. They specifically mention this.

That's true enough, except the amount of questionable practices Valve do compared to EA, and defending EA in this situation with that argument is like saying a Nun is bad as a murderer because she picked her nose once. Not to mention, Valve manage to hav a pretty decent bottom line while keeping gamers happy. Whereas EA just screw ver gamers again and again. Case in point, my friend pre-ordered ME3 on Origin, then cancelled it to buy it in store. He got his refund, except on release date EA charged him for it again. They "refunded" him, but it never appearead in his bank account. He asked them what was going on and they disabled ME3. So he's payed them twice for a game he can't play now.

I will gladly cope with the "always online" requirement if it means cool features like this. I hate insane DRM just as much as all of you do but, if done right, there can be significant advantages to forcing the player to always have an internet connection. Are you expecting an offline version of Guild Wars 2, WoW, etc. as well?

While I agree with the idea behind your reasoning, I disagree with how its applied by EA here. Those features should be optional, but the always online feature should only be forced if it significantly alters gameplay to have online.

Don't get me wrong, I don't see the value in having a game always-connected, especially if it's some lame way to combat unauthorized play, but at the same time, when I play a game I do not disconnect from the internet.

I play unconnected fairly often, on my laptop at Uni during breaks. Not to mention, even if EA never screwed anyone over and only wanted the best for gamers, they still wouldn't keep those servers up in 30 years time.

Hell, I could understand if they only required for it to connect during startup. At least then you won't be booted mid-game.

If I recall the game isn't out and the Dev-team might find this as a non-viable feature if it really is online-only in mind. The Sims 3 always acted like online was important in the main-game when it wasn't, it was mostly there for micro-transactions and Facebook fanatic users.

Except they never said always on net for Sims 3 if I recall correctly.

Jesus people, stop whining... that's all this forum is these days.

Use my phones hotspot? I do that all the time! If I'm in a lecture and I need internet, anyway.
Sitting still, it still drops out every now and again...What would it do in a car? Not to mention, would it also (Depending on data usage) drive my bill up the wall? Stop being so closed minded, you obviously don't leave your house/work/school too much if you haven't had a unstable net connection for more than 1 minute in 10 years. Also, nice assumption. 10 years ago I was on dailup with a 200MB limit. Not everyone has unlimited ADSL2 running at 8Mbit/s, or FIOS, you know? My SGSII works great for tethering, but it's cap is only 2GB.

Not to mention, even if you have decent internet that never, ever goes down for any reason, what if their servers go down? What if it's in the middle of a game and you've forgotten to save?

you know what, I've done that in my highschool and college days. Ever since I started working I buy my own games. I don't care if I have a lot less games to "get my hands on," it just feels better that I own the thing.

Now, I'm actually reconsidering this option.

Seriously

first question : not very often. But as you said theres the vacation trips (you know, night time before sleep), during transportation, but most of the time, just playing offline games when I'm DLing heavily on my other computer knowing that disconnecting wouldnt affect my game (this has happened to War3 dota and SC2 to cost a game loss, a lot of ppl have tried that, ppl didn't make up the phrase "stop DLing pr0n" when someone lags)

Second question : Definitely. Simcity is a great game on the go, its good on your laptop because when it's really on your lap, it doesn't affect your gameplay experience, as suppose to games that require mouse aiming precision, etc. It's a laid back game, PERFECT GAME FOR OFFLINE GAMING

you're getting everything wrong bro, you're throwing other people's options away cuz you don't play like that man
