[PC Gamer] Minecraft makes $80 million in 15 months

The Financial Times report that Minecraft creators, Mojang, have filed their finances in Sweden, declaring $80 million in revenue. With interest, taxation and depreciation deducted, that’s $13.5 million on profit in the 15 months since players were able to buy the first alpha build of Minecraft back in October 2010. Just imagine the number of Choc Ices you could buy with that.

Lol, $13.5M after taxes...

I did hear that Sweden has one of the highest tax rates in the world. Not sure if that's still true today, but based on those numbers, it sure sounds like it!

Also, what do they mean by "depreciation" deducted? How does Mojang have much of anything to depreciate? Are they talking about amortization of intangible goods?

On top of that, what interest do they have to pay? Notch made the game in his own free time, so I doubt there's anything in the way of company short term or long term liabilities. Makes no sense to me...

Probably similar to the EBITDA formulation.

Its not that they lots 66.5 million to taxes etc etc - 80 million was their revenue, and they profited 13.5 million.

My guess is that 13.5 million is AFTER paying all the bills, employees, licencing fees etc etc.

Regardless this is kinda of silly to report because they will surely make loads more over the next few years...

Oh and Notch also said he if you can't afford the game to go get it on the piratebay lol... I think they are happy with where it has put them.... its less about $ and more about show the world they are a capable team. :>

Depreciation is applied to any assets (except land, which usually appreciates instead). Their computers, for example, would depreciate.

Guys, we here at OCN need to make our own game to get rich off of. I lack coding skills and have no idea how to fund such a project, but I will bring pizza and beer for those of you that can. thumb.gif

You can find somewhere to put my name in the credits right?

Well minecraft is way more expensive now that it's not in beta.. and I actually blew $26 on it a few weeks ago.

If he keeps updating, he will be making more and more money.

Well yeah, but that's going to amount to what, a few grand? I don't think they even bought their own authentication servers - AFAIK, that is still hosted elsewhere. That's my point - they don't own anything large enough to depreciate - or at least, large enough for the depreciation to make a difference in the $13.5M number.

Maybe you're right, and they just have a weird way of saying "net profit".

EDIT: After thinking about it more, I suppose it makes sense. PC Gamer assumes that anyone looking at any kind of number labeled "profit" would already assume net income after expenses, so they don't bother saying it is after expenses. They mention interest, taxes, and depreciation since those are figures that aren't always included in profit calculations, thus they want to clarify that those figures have been included in the $13.5M.

Also, looked up Sweden's tax rate... 26% corporate, but up to 57% individual. Interesting way to go about it.
