Thunderbolt.

post #1 of 11

Hi all,

Anyone know what the deal is going behind intel/apple agreement on thunderbolt?

Here's the situation:
My friend has a iMac with thunderbolt port ONLY (no mini dvi, mdp).
He has a PC.
He wants to connect said PC to use the iMac (27inch) as a monitor.
It doesn't work because thunderbolt, albeit sharing the same geometry as a miniDP, it won't work.
This is because Thunderbolt transfers both video and data (pci-e) so it's not possible to have it work.

I heard Intel/Apple signed some agreement or something regarding this?

Is there any vendors working (close to finishing within a month or two) towards a (M)DP->Thunderbolt adapter?

Thanks for any insight guys.

Is this what you mean?

Wow. I guess not. Good luck, I'm sorry. Apparently it's been a problem since Feb 2011. As I understand it:
TB --> MDP works, but
MDP --> TB does not

I'm not sure if there will be a solution if this has been a problem for months and nothing has been released.

Ya, if the monitor is Thunderbolt, it doesn't work.

Looking for any updates/news on this however. Is it at least coming out soon, does anyone know?

Thanks

You don't even need thunderbolt to do this, use TB to MDP and attach male end of cable from PC gfx card. Drive the specified iMac in target display mode. *Think* you can use CMD+F2 to switch source displays.

As for the intel/thunderbolt into mainstream computing. Wait until hard launch of IB and subsequent boards.

That doesn't work.

If the monitor is thundebolt only, going from mdp (gfx) to thunderbolt does not produce video. This is the exact problem I'm trying to solve.

So this won't work, but:

I think they're your best hope. That looks like the sort of adapter you do need, but it says "Not Thunderbird Compatible" all over it. Don't buy it, but if they came out with a new model it would probably be what you need. They look like they make the conversion circuitry (which is why this old model is so expensive).

So that iMac really only has TB in?

I sort of think this would work, if you set up the iMac as a monitor for the software, and use this as HDMI in or something:

Costs $995 and does a crapload of stuff you don't need.

haha imagine if it was 995$ and didn't work!

See this is what I'm wondering about, people (kanex included) complains that they don't have the thunderbolt chip yet, as Intel won't release them or something. Intel has some sort of contract until 201X with apple that gives apple exclusive thunderbolt support.

This is going to be so sad if there's a PC on the side and the iMac can't be used as a monitor. Waste of an IPS 27incher.

Hopefully something emerges. Only Sony has expressed any interest in using thunderbolt after Apple loses their contract, which makes me a bit concerned this is going to end like firewire vs USB2.
