right after I stopped the video I left it and the screen came back but no peripherals were working

Do you have the latest directX 9.0c driver? If not, go here to get it http://driversdownloadnow.com/Directx-9.0C/drivers/ and see if this works.

IMO, i this does not work, I would think it's time to RMA the gpu

Some guy on the EVGA forums has the same issue but if he starts a game quick enough and then exits he does not get the red screen, then someone else thought it might be an unstable chip and need more voltage as when the game starts the voltage goes up.

Why don't you sell your lightning xtreme tomorrow and buy a temporary card for $50 or less? I always have a backup video card for times like these.

Callsign_Vega here from OCN started a thread on the Nvidia Forums about the exact same issue, turns out it was a problem with the SLI connector. He changed it and the problem went away. Here is the thread.

You don't appear to have more than one card, so your problem is elsewhere. Maybe it's a problem withe the X79 platform, after all they disabled PCIe 3.0 temporarily for some reason.

Well, if you're afraid of your extreme lighting depreciating, you're going to be losing money anyway. You might as well spend that $50 on a video card than just lose $50 in depreciation.
