HDD dead or can it be fixed?

I've been having computer issues lately. Thought it was because of System Care Pro (got a free key, and thought I'd try it out). Prior to installing it, I made a backup image of my HDD. You know JUST in case.

Restored from it (drive wipe and then restore), and it's still messing up. I used the standard windows recovery to do the backup, and my W7 USB drive to restore it.

I then thought it was my OC, but something made me think it was my HDD.

What was happening to my computer was stuff just being laggy/unresponsive. Programs wouldn't start up when clicked, when opening something like documents I had to wait for stuff to load in, and the biggest thing was if I had to force restart. Meaning I clicked on the restart button on the case, cause the lag, and waiting was horrible. After doing a forced restart the harddrive wouldn't be detected. I got the failed into boot message, or no system image detected. So I had to use my W7 USB drive to go into repair and fix start up.

In all my time with windows I've never had a force reset do that. Sure I'd get the Windows unexpected shut down do you want to look into it message, but the drive refusing to be seen? Even going into Ubuntu that disk wouldn't show up. Only fix was to use the W7 USB drive to fix it.

I decided to use Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tools. Just to rule out HDD issues. Sure enough I get an error code 08 - Too many bad sectors detected.

So, what can I do? Any way to fix it? Or is the drive dead? I got this drive (WDC WD7501AALS-00E8B0) from someone, so it is second hand.

have you tried running chkdsk on it?

you can check if the drive is still under warranty, but you will probably have to get the original owner to help you out with the rma.

Thanks for info.

I think the problem was a bad sata port frown.gif I tried a few things (putting a new drive there) and the drive did the same stuff. Not booting into windows (even if everything was restarted fine).

So, I did another image restore to the drive, and I'm hoping that's the last. If not I'll report back.

3 things are to blame.

Drive is dying.
Restoring from an image on a good day just does not work.
The restored image tried formatting an already corrupt format.

Have you legitimately reinstalled windows?

Yes, but on another drive. After getting into windows, and restarting (again on a completely different drive, but with the same SATA port and cable) I got a no boot drive selected. Went into BIOS, and it saw the drive (320), but it just would not boot at all.

Try another SATA port. Then you will know if it's the port alone or something bigger. Either way I tend to think it's related to the mobo. Different drive same problems... it's not the drive. Make sure they aren't the Marvell ports if you have them.

Also assuming you aren't using a hacked OS... One never knows.

Trying on a different SATA port now. I won't know if it works till I use it more.

As for the hacked OS. Nope it's 100% legal!
