I played five years of EQ when it first released and it was an awesome game. It was the first MMO of it's kind. New, fresh way to play and interact with others playing the same game, SOE introduced so much of what others emulated into their own MMO's afterward. So much was built upon the base of other MMO's that followed due to Everquest.
Games like WOW learned so much from EQ. Spells, classes, training, leveling, skills, races, specializations, armor, weapons, melee, all done by Everquest first.
At the time we didn't even know how addicting it would become. Were unaware of the game that would pull us in like heroin and change how some viewed socialization. I've even missed some days of work being *cough* sick just to raid, pull rare boss mob spawns for a slight chance of a specialized drop that was very rare in game for prestige status.
SOE will be missed but more for those of us who remember more than the younger generation that has no idea of what it meant to them today.
