[Space] Rover Turns to Supercomputing Power in Moon Race.

A robotic rover aims to win a $30 million race to the moon by harnessing the same computing power driving today's fastest supercomputers.

The graphics processing units (GPUs) made by NVIDIA would help the "Asimov" lunar rover roll safely across the lunar surface, report back its activities in real-time, and even create gorgeous lunar maps from 3D images sent back to Earth.

Thought this was pretty nifty, first I've heard of it.

I bet they aren't using 590s.

{Because their TDP is 365W and unsuitable for space travel, remind me never to take you kids to see a magician.}

Yea, really?

I'm thinking they would be using Tesla boards instead. Like it infers in the articles ending.

If any conventional GPUs are used they'll be Teslas.

yea.. theyd use tesla's and they would probably be highly modified to survive space missions... so nothing we could really get … us mere mortals frown.gif

Can't be that hard to fit a dozen inside a rover on a custom PCB. How the crap are they gonna cool it though? The moon has a negligible atmosphere, it's almost a vacuum.

The same way they kept astronauts cooled on the moon.

Quoted from Universe Today:
Quote:
To deal with this dramatic range in temperature, spacesuits are heavily insulated with layers of fabric and then covered with reflective outer layers. This minimizes the temperature differences between when the astronaut is in the sunlight and when in shade. Space suits also have internal heaters and cooling systems, and liquid heat exchange pumps that remove excess heat.
