EK Full motherboard waterblock, worthwhile?

post #1 of 54
Thread Starter
Hello,

Is the full motherboard waterblock worth it? I'm going for stable overclocks, but not setting any records. The less noise the better, and I see that the Asus Rampage Extreme IV has a fan on the chipset.

Thoughts?

If I add the chipset, where in the loop? Res -> CPU -> Mobo -> GPUs -> Rad?

Thanks in advance.

a full MOBO block is NEVER worth it. just block the cpu and gpu. and if you DO add a mobo block, it should be the last one before the radiator
post #3 of 54
For Sandy Bridge no. For 2011 Socket, maybe. The higher the overclock, the more stress on the power system. But a fan blowing over the VRM's is more than enough. Water block helps lower temps much more and it looks better. But for a good stable overclock it is not required.

I have an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula board that I'll be putting an EK block on, but that model has been known to have chipset cooling issues. It's probably entirely unnecessary, but it gives me a little peace of mind, and it's mostly for aesthetic purposes anyway biggrin.gif

I have an EK MOSFET block on my Gigabyte G990 UD7 and I am totally fine with it. The only downside is that there is no heatpipe to the SB and it is not full coverage.

However, on previous builds I do it just because, if you are going to watercool the CPU and GPU, why leave certain parts aircooled? I usually put the block right before my CPU block.

Every boards have VRM sinks to cool those down. Put a fan on it. That's what I did and I saw 10C idle temp drop and 20C load temp drop. Worth it? Well for 6$ it was. Now I have a large headroom to overclock more, before I was limited by the VRM temp being too high.
So unless the VRM are way too hot I don't see why you would kill the flow of your loop for such a minimal improvement.

I did it for my 920, and thought after I did it, that I had wasted the money. Its not worth it. Just use a simple fan over the heatsink.

For LGA 2011, i'd say it's worth it because the VRMs get so hot. Also if you have a rampage IV the chipset fan is ridiculously loud, the full cover blocks are nice for that alone.

I have mine set up this way:

RES -> PUMP -> CPU -> chipset/VRM -> RAD
