EK Full motherboard waterblock, worthwhile? - Page 4

What if you want a system without any fans? What if you want a system with just a single fan on a single radiator (low power, silent). I am planning on water, to be completely silent. I could care less about overclocking. It's going to be impossible for me to water cool a south bridge on a µATX board, though.

You still need airflow in the case, you can have a silent computer using fans at around the 1000rpm speed.

Even slow fans are not quiet enough for my tastes. What do you need fans for if you water cool the GPU, CPU, chipset, voltage regulators, and the PSU?

When you say that even slow fans are not quiet enough I don't think you are speaking from experience because not all fans are noisy, there's a huge number of fans out there that are almost undetectable to human hearing. The circuit boards get very hot you are not water cooling those, the blocks absorb heat and causes your ambient to rise in your case. Water cooling doesn't completely remove 100% of the heat from your computer. If you think 800-1000 rpm is to loud you should probably buy an ipad or laptop. I have perfect hearing and 800-1000rpms is not going to disturb me, I have more important things to worry about when I'm busy using my computer listening to music a low volumes.

The only reason I can see a water block for a MB is, A) You need high over clocks that will stress the MOSFET, VRM, chipset or B) You are after a absolute silent system.

C) You got the extra cash and you like the "bling" factor.
D) You need to have a bigger epeen then everyone else.

With quiet builds the biggest issue at the end of the day is the pump the Hdd and PSU. The HDD are the easiest buy ssd or HDD silencing boxers (which work alright) both of which are rather expensive (but so is most good things in life). The PSU is the next issue duel passive is probably the way to go (if you need that much power the best i'v see was 550-600w and they tend not to be any good with high ambient temps however)
or maybe a thermaltake Toughpower XT Platinum 1275 W (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Thermaltake/TPX-1275M/) silent at least while idling.

Then the pumps I would recommend getting a eheim 1048 submerge it in a custom res add foam on all sides and then have a those large passive rads like so http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/systems-2008/lian-li/tremeloes/lian-li-pc-a01-htpc.htm

I have never try this set up but its the only way i think you could ever get a pump silent...... people will say ddc-1 (the quietest ddc pumps that i'm aware of ) are silent but there not. While they are not noise by any means they seem to have a noise level similar two a 1600 fan but it seems to carry really well. I have 2 ddc-1 in a custom make noise proof box (admittedly poorly built) w/ high quality 1cm thick anti noise foam on 5 of the 6 sides Its still the most noise thing in my system...

IMO you can WC anything but weather you are willing to make a custom WB is another matter..... I would still recommend having 2 fans @500rpm mark that should be silent and at least give some air flow...

I agree that 1000 fans have a noticeable level of noise it really just depends on your environmental at midday my pc seems silent but now at 2am in the morning its irritating (that said i have 21fans running at 600-800 rpm) I would strongly recommend shrouds for fans really reduces noise!

btw maybe you can find a block and make a custom mounting bracket way easier than make a whole block

Have you ever run a water cooling setup? How do you think the heat is dissipated from the radiators? They require fans to remove the heat, otherwise your whole loop will boil. Think about how a car coolant system works.

Water cooling is not about quiet operation, it's about performance. I have more fans in my system now than when I air cooled.

Not at all I ran my loop fanless for about 6 months, yes it was hotter than running with fans and I couldn't run an overclock but it was nowhere near boiling.

Have you ever heard of passive cooling? I never said the thing radiating the heat had to be in the case, nor even the pump for that matter. They don't even have to be in the same room.

Your last line is completely subjective.
